ABACUS is an ambitious sextet project run by Saxophonist, Composer and Improvisor Liam Brennan.

Formed in 2022, the project concept was heavily influenced by Omer Avital’s Asking No Permission featuring a 4-horn
frontline.

Combining elements from contemporary Jazz and Classical as well as post tonal music and Scandinavian Folk, the music celebrates some of the most exciting improvisors from Birmingham and London:

- Tenor Saxophone/Bass Clarinet

Kai Chareunsy - Drums

Liam draws influences from composers John Hollenbeck and John Taylor, as well as Charles Mingus and Oliver
Nelson. Liam is currently studying a masters in composition and improvisation, and is currently based in Gothenburg Sweden.

This performance is part of their debut album release tour, which will be available to purchase at the gig.

Giulia Marro is a clarinetist and vocalist based in London who has been making her mark on the UK jazz scene following the release of her highly acclaimed debut album ‘A Portrait of Giulia’.

“Giulia’s composing and playing combines creativity and craft in an immensely memorable fashion and truly marks her out as a Voice with a capital ‘V’…” - North London Jazz Collective

As an accomplished bandleader, Giulia has led ensembles across the UK, performing at well-known jazz venues and festivals and captivating audiences with her warm, melody-centred clarinet sound. Her performances are characterised by a strong sense of narrative and an evident love for the tradition of small-group jazz.

This quartet featuring London’s best upcoming talent will be bringing swing to the forefront through original compositions and some of their favourites from the Great American Songbook.

Ollie Canham is a London-based jazz guitarist, composer and arranger, and a graduate of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, where he developed a distinctive voice as both a performer and writer. Recently returned to London, he spent last August touring China with the Doug Sides Legacy Band, performing across multiple cities over the course of a month.

An award winning composer, Ollie is a recipient of both the Eddie Harvey and Mike Gibbs awards.

“Ollie is the latest in a long line of creative jazz arrangers and composers to emerge from Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. He has a unique arranging style, stemming from his imaginative and varied approach to playing the guitar” (Ed Puddick, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire)

For this performance, Ollie will be presenting a set of original compositions and arrangements.

An in-demand virtuoso known for his dynamic touch and stylistic versatility, Harry is a sought-after performer on the London scene. 15/03/26 - Joe Baz Quintet

Joe Bazalgette is a saxophonist and flautist based in London. Currently in his fourth year studying at the Royal Academy of Music, Joe performs around London with a large variety of acts ranging from modern jazz original gigs and traditional jazz sessions to folk rock and much more.
He leads his own quintet playing original compositions taking inspiration from artists such as Mark Turner, Wayne Shorter and Sonny Rollins as well as classical composers such as Claude Debussy and Olivier Messiaen.
