Ramsgate, say hello to our gorgeous sighthounds; long-limbed, lovely and the stars of Thursday’s drawing class 🐾

We are so happy to welcome back little Charlie, a charming Italian greyhound who loves nothing more than cosy snuggles in blankets on laps. We met him last year at our first Margate class, and he had only been with his new family for a little while. Since then he has settled in superbly, and we can’t wait to get an update on his latest adventures.

Then let’s meet 7 year old Dakota, rescued after he’d retired from racing before he’d really even started—apparently he was “too playful” for the track! An old man at heart; his favourite things are his sofa, fancy treats, and taking life at his own pace.

And then there’s sweet Elsie. She came to her forever family in poor shape, with cuts, bald patches and overgrown nails but it certainly hasn’t put her off people. She adores fuss, and will gladly knock a phone out your hand to make sure she’s getting maximum strokes. A real sun-worshipper, Elsie needs factor 50 on hot days!

Last few tickets are now available via the website, £35 with £10 donated to

Rats rarely score highly on favourite animal lists, but how about crime fighting giant rats in tiny backpacks?

These are known as Hero Rats, specially trained to use their incredible sense of smell to sniff out land mines, the tuberculosis disease and the illegal smuggling of wildlife. At APOPO rats and humans work together, to help the world, with love, respect and animal welfare as the top priority. Oh and at the end of every week it’s where the rats are treated to their favourite snack, swipe to the end for happy banana munching.

Today on we are honouring one hero rat in particular, the late, great Magawa. In his lifetime (8 years) he sniffed out over 100 land mines in Cambodia earning him a medal and a 7ft carved statue of himself.

Join Jennie on 30th June for a (live!) online class with celebrating these radiant rodents and raising money for a truly incredible charity.

The day we met baby owls, watched a bald eagle have a bath, and saw the birds soar through the skies.

I swear there is some special magic about our Drawing & Flying Days. This month, the weather gods were shining down upon us and we had the nicest group of people (including a few lovely regulars, hi) down to spend time in the company of beautiful birds of prey.

In the morning we sketched the ovals in the owls, found the angles in the vultures and got out our softest pencils for the softy downy owlets. And in the afternoon, we donned the falconry gloves for a first hand look at the flying styles, watching them land on your arm and looking them in the eye so close up is EXHILARATING.

As always, we were given the VIP treatment from the wonderful, knowledgable team and it was a pleasure learning all about the birds and their conservation and they flew over the fields they call home. Some incredible artworks from all taking part, a special mention for and his 5 minute ink sketch and .and.blurry for her charming owlet animations 🦉

We all know that Thanet is an isle of dog lovers, and we have a drawing class that will be absolutely paw-fect for you 🐾

We will be celebrating lovely long dogs at our upcoming Sighthound Special on Thursday 4th June; drawing gorgeous greyhounds, luscious lurchers and wonderful whippets at a relaxing and friendly creative class

The class will begin with an introduction and drawing demo by local artist Jennie Webber. We will then set our sights on our speedy, stroke-able supermodels- all rescued ex-racers now happily rehomed by the team at Kent Greyhound Rescue. Thanks to this fantastic charity, each of our doggy models is now enjoying life at a slower pace, and being given the care and affection they deserve. Some are in their forever homes, others are currently staying with fabulous fosterers while they wait to be adopted.

Each of the dogs we will meet is confident and happy to be out and about, they all love a bit of attention. They will come along with their humans, and we will also be joined by Amanda who works at the charity, who will talk about the realities of greyhound racing and the fascinating history of this beautiful breed.

No prior art experience is needed to join the session- whether you’re a dab hand or an absolute beginner we are confident that with a few of Jennie’s simple tips and tricks, she will have you sketching away in no time. At our classes we use drawing as a tool to learn more about animals and conservation- there’s no pressure to create a “perfect” portrait!

Seahorses really are a little bit magical. We are so lucky to have them!

The most elegant and unusual fish (yes, they are fish!) with their upright stance, frilled fins, chameleon-like eyes and strong square tails. Instead of swimming around, most spend their time on the ocean floor using these tails to grip to seagrass, kelp and coral, drifting with the current and camouflaging themselves superbly. They can change the colour AND the texture of their skin to match their surroundings.

Male seahorses actually get pregnant, the only known species in the animal kingdom to do this (and you must google seahorse birth, it’s quite something) and during breeding season the females give the post-partum males a generous few hours to rest after birth before impregnating them again.

We spent the evening class with the amazing Neil Maidment-Garrick, founder of an expert diver and the man that has lead the way to identifying and protecting the two native UK seahorses; the short shouted and the spiny. He has put together guidelines on how divers can carefully observe seahorses without disturbing them, as they can die from shock from camera flashes and unexpected interactions. Neil also shared some shocking information on the disgustingly large number of seahorses taken from the wild for traditional medicine across China, and for the curio trade. Give the Seahorse Man documentary on Netflix a watch to find out more.

Take a look through these stunning artworks made at our latest online drawing class, an absolutely joyful evening that I didn’t want to end! Thanks to everyone we raised a solid £125 for the Seahorse Trust, stay tuned for part two: Sea Dragons 🐉

Such a special evening with the members 🫏

We were treated to an unseasonably warm April day, and some gorgeous evening sunshine, as we welcomed the lovely Stylist members to the farm with a delicious drink with farm herbs from 🌿

The wonderful Jenny (farm manager Jenny, not me) took us on a tour of the yard, stopping in to stroke the donkeys, tickle the pig and coo over the quails.

We were soundtracked by the noisy sheep as we ran through some fun drawing exercises, applying the “potato with a face” technique to the guinea pigs. Then we spent some time getting to know the animals through sketching, hopping over the fence to hang out with the goats and enjoying the surprising calm and quiet, despite the E1 postcode.

The biggest thank you to Spitalfields City Farm (you have my whole heart, anyone who hasn’t been MUST go immediately please) and to Sim (best brownies in town) and to the amazing for these lush photos and of course the lovely team for the opportunity 🐐

Pssst if you need some lovely farm drawing in your life, we’re Hackney City Farm to sketch the new babies on 11th June, and we’ll be back at Spitalfields in September 🐑
