Home needs to be safe. Study Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and you will see that safety is a basic human need just above breathing. On June 24, 2021, the Surfside building of condominiums collapsed due to water leaking and eroding its structure over time. I was renting a condo in an old building on the water’s edge in Miami at the time, and I thought of the collapse as I tried to sleep each night for a few weeks following. Then I saw that the sea air had corroded the cement pillars in the garage that were holding up my building. I came home one day to find a notice from the city taped to the front gate, demanding that the building be repaired or demolished. I moved back to a building in which I had formerly lived in a different part of the city. I initially left it because of noise. Two months later, its association sent out an email that all residents would need to park in a garage two blocks down. Inspection revealed that pool chemicals had been poured incorrectly, spilling and eroding the cement columns down to the metal rebar that held up the building and the six story garage under the seventh floor pool. It was the same situation as Surfside. I lived on the fourteen floor. The repairs were done correctly. This painting expresses feelings from my experience in a non-literal way, as do some paintings in oil that I did around that time.

- [ ] How does travel influence an artist? I made this watercolor in my sketchbook in London. A chair and a table were spotlighted on the stage at the Greenwich Theater in the UK where an actor was to do a reading of a work in progress. This simple structure was the start if this image (I reduced it to a rectangle with two lines for the table and a chair back attached to its top. London architecture filled my mind: towers, symmetry, stone. A hybrid of these occurs in the light area of the upper left portion of this image with the table and chair serving a double function as an entry to a castle. The black lines are shorthand, abbreviated descriptions of structure and space. A hint of a circular structure is in the upper right, lighter in color to show it is further away. It feels a passage from a romantic painting. There is enough there for you to dream the rest yourself.

- [ ] Light fills the buildings, slipping through sides, more or less defined. Blue-filled cubes connote rooms filled with water or the dim glow of night. Some shapes serve a dual function, for instance the upside down fray triangle in the top center reads as both space and the side of a roof. Quickly drawn lines convey energy, contrasting with the otherwise quiet atmosphere. There is a sense of optimism in the overall openness of the image and peach tone. watercolor 2026.

Amsterdam buildings don’t disappoint- the tilting of some structures bends one’s perception. Many are from the 1600s. The devotion to historic preservation is impressive when it’s such a battle in the U.S.
