July to November 2026 at the Finborough Theatre

Artistic Director Neil McPherson says:

‘As always, our July to November 2026 season brings together vibrant new writing and unique rediscoveries. This season’s rediscoveries are from two great British playwrights – one from the 20th century, and one from the 21st (Arnold Wesker and David Ireland). Whilst we are deeply rooted in our local community, we have always strived to ensure that our programming is never purely London-centric, and so this season’s new plays are both London premieres following acclaimed sell-out tours of Northern England – with Local from the North West, and The Moth from the North East.

Our new season comes at a pivotal moment following Arts Council England awarding us a major year-long development grant for the very first time in our history. As we approach our 50th anniversary, we are both delighted and relieved that Arts Council England have recognised the work that we do, but also the urgency of the catastrophic challenges facing fringe theatre. The award will safeguard our existing work, but crucially expand it by building a more sustainable foundation for the years ahead...

The season concludes with the London premiere of The Moth by Paul Herzberg, directed by Jake Murray, playing 27 October – 21 November 2026. A chance meeting on a train between a Black British journalist and a White South African ex-soldier sets in motion a chain of events that reshapes their lives. Inspired by a true story, and the playwright’s own experience of Apartheid, The Moth is a gripping psychological thriller of race, war, and legacy.

October sees David Ireland’s explosive debut play What The Animals Say, running from 29 September – 24 October 2026. Two ex-classmates wait for the Stranraer ferry back to Belfast. But what begins as banter spirals into confrontation as violence and sectarianism rise to the surface… Harry Burton directs Robbie Martin, and Matthew Blaney – who returns to the Finborough Theatre after his OffWestEnd Award nominated performance in David Ireland’s Not Now.
