Rare chance to hear William Walton's "Cantico del Sole" at Choral Evensong at St Bride's Church, The Journalists' Church this Harvest Sunday at 5:30pm. It sets a hymn text in praise of Nature and God’s Creation which St Francis of Assisi – the patron saint of animals and the environment – wrote while he recovered from illness in the glorious hills of Umbria.

This publicity shot from one of Walton’s Australian tours shows him holding a Koala. It was common practice at the time for visiting musicians to be pictured encountering Australia's unique wildlife. Sadly the Koala is now listed as endangered; a stark reminder of the pressing need to change our relationship with the natural world.

Sunday Choral Evensong features a St Bride's speciality – a Sermon in Music – where the spoken sermon is replaced by us singing an extended anthem.

This week it's the set of "Five spirituals" from the oratorio "A Child of Our Time" by Michael Tippett which he wrote in reaction to the 1938 Kristallnacht pogrom in Magdeburg. The unaccompanied spirituals speak powerfully of the suffering of the victims of oppression to profoundly moving effect.

The setting for Choral Eucharist is Lassus's double-choir Missa Bell' Amfitrit' altera which includes some wonderful interplay between the choirs and a beautiful Benedictus.

There are some wonderful pictures of Lassus and his musicians at the Bavarian court by Hans Muelich, the court illustrator of manuscripts, which were included in collections of Lassus's motets.

Everyone is warmly welcome at St Bride's Church, The Journalists' Church, as always.

LAST CHANCE to sign the St Bride's petition to stop the introduction of Sunday parking charges! This would be yet another blow to Sunday congregations and choirs across the City of London on a day when traffic is negligible and public transport completely unreliable.

St Bride’s is one of the City's most important heritage sites and has survived more than 1,500 years of history through plague, fire and bombs – but proposed City of London Corporation Sunday parking charges could do real harm to our future.

If you value St Bride’s and all the other City churches, please add your name to our petition. Follow the link to find out more and sign → https://www.change.org/StopSundayCharges

Two perfect, musical gems on Sunday at St Bride's Church, The Journalists' Church. At 11am, Tallis' "Salvator mundi" published in the 1575 Cantiones sacrae, that astonishing joint collection of music by William Byrd and his older friend and mentor Thomas Tallis. And at 5:30pm , Monteverdi's "Christe, adoramus te", equally exquisite and expressive, but contrastingly driven by focus on the text.

St Bride’s Choir and the London Festival of Contemporary Church Music

⭐ London Festival of Contemporary Church Music 2026: Friday 8th - Sunday 17th May
📍 At churches across London

We are delighted to be part of this year’s London Festival of Contemporary Church Music, a celebration of living composers and vibrant new sacred music across the capital.

Music is central to our life here at St Bride's – and this May two of our Sunday choral services are part of the festival.

Both services are free to attend and are followed by refreshments.

🗓️ Choral Eucharist
Sunday 10th May, 11:00am
The first performance at St Bride's of the Missa syllabica by the organist and award-winning composer Nicholas O'Neill.

The anthem – also a St Bride's debut – is a setting of the Easter sequence "Victimae paschali laudes" by Philip Lawson, who was a former member of the King Singers and their principal arranger for many years.

🗓️ Choral Evensong
Sunday 17th May, 5:30pm

Philip Moore's wonderful set of Preces & Responses are a regular feature at St Bride's. Moore was Organist and Master of the Music at York Minster for over twenty years. In 2016 the Archbishop of Canterbury awarded him the Cranmer Award for Worship "for his contribution to the English choral tradition as a composer, arranger and performer."

Errollyn Wallen was appointed Master of the King's Music in 2024. Her "Evening Service for Westminster Abbey" is receiving its first performance at St Bride's as part of the festival.

Helen Neeves Sop and Composer is a former member of St Bride's Choir and now a BBC Singer. Her music is a regular part of our repertoire. This setting of "Hail gladdening light" is another premiere.
