Mon 6.30-8.30pm
Holding Coolness in Heat

This week we’re working with three painters who each offer a different way of holding coolness inside warmth. From the still air of an interior to calm colour planes to lifted desert light, the room will move through three quiet temperature states.

*Jean Baptiste Siméon Chardin* (1699–1779)
Genre: French still life and domestic interior painting
The coolness of shade inside summer heat. Soft light on everyday objects. A grounded, steady atmosphere.

*Milton Avery* (1885–1965)
Genre: American modernist colour field figuration and landscape
Open colour. Calm planes. Warmth held lightly, with space to breathe.

*Agnes Pelton* (1881–1961)
Genre: American transcendental abstraction
Desert radiance. Glowing inner light. Atmospheres that rise and expand without heaviness.

Warm ups in the first half.
Longer drawing on mount board in 2nd half.

Always tickles when someone arrives tired or jet lagged and leaves energized.

Tonight's brief:

⭐ Monday 18th May

Shaping Calm

*Etel Adnan · Richard Diebenkorn · William Scott*

After last week’s silhouettes and cut‑out theatre, we’re moving into a *portrait‑free session*
A quiet modernist evening focused on colour, shape and spatial calm.

Artworks inspired by:

*Etel Adnan*
Small radiant landscapes, soft geometry, distilled colour.

*Richard Diebenkorn*
Berkeley and early Ocean Park periods.
Air, structure, gentle spatial thinking.

*William Scott*
Quiet forms, domestic abstraction, soft edges.

Warm ups in the first hour as usual, with short introductions into their style. Quick studies from each image to explore shape, structure and negative space before we move into the second half.
Compositional sketches from any of the three, then a longer drawing on mount board.

Etel has some lovely interviews to look up over the weekend if you fancy some background inspiration.
