2025 WRAP UP - Pup Play
I’m extremely proud to have toured around my first proper Fringe show around the world. I don’t think even I fully anticipated the love and praise around the world for this weird dog show. Pup Play has pushed me as an artist in every sense. Everyone says it looks exhausting to do, and trust me, IT IS. But if it’s easy, is it really worth doing? 9 awards/nominations and $1400+ raised for charity later, it was definitely worth doing. Pup Play has changed and developed so much this past year and I’m proud to be submitting it in my PhD in a few months.

The real people to thank however is all of you who came to the show. The fringes who let it go on. The billeters and friends who let me sleep in their house. The people who stuck around, bought me a drink, and chatted for hours after. There’s literally like a hundred of you, so I will not go through the effort finding your insta tags, YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE. And if you don’t, you should DM me so I can shower you with praise.

Here’s to more performances and whatever comes next!

I was preparing for my PhD Viva and found an EARLY draft of Pup Play. At this point, the show was written to be Handler David and his pack. This version was scrapped because every actor I approached was “too intimidated” to be in the show, so it became a one man show somewhat out of necessity. Ultimately, Pup Play transformed into David aspiring for what he has in this draft. And in my opinion, all the better for it. But it’s nice to compare the polished draft with my crappy jokes in progress and the bouncy dialogue of this version. Writing is a process! And nothing ever stays the same. Enjoy a few excerpts and see if you recognize anything that made it into the final show.

Matthew Archer is an actor and writer based in Essex, and a graduate of East 15 Acting School. Matthew first performed in Colchester back in 2014 and is excited to return and experience the Colchester Fringe Festival for the first time.
