CHARLES KEEPING
AN ILLUSTRATOR’S LIFE

We have just acquired a rare copy of this wonderful biography of the great Charles Keeping.

One of my favourite artists, when I was young, I poured over his illustrations and jacket covers, hypnotised and enthralled by his magnetic vision.

This lovely book, now out of print is an absolute must for all book-lovers and illustration students. I am adding it to our bookshop now. Link in the bio.

SHOEN KAI - Annual exhibition of Calligraphy at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Ueno Park, Tokyo

Congratulations to my friend Iccho Hama-san for winning this years first prize 🥇.

‘’Japanese Calligraphy, known as ‘Shado’, is more than a method of writing - it’s a harmonious balance between mind, body and spirit. Rooted in centuries-old tradition, calligraphy transforms the simple act of writing into a dynamic visual and emotional experience. Each stroke is an expression of intent, discipline and the calligrapher’s intent’’ (SK).

Amazing to see this huge collection of work, exhibited in the impressive halls of these esteemed national art gallery. The diversity, intensity, skill and expression of the Kanji is profound.

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE  (1963)
MAURICE SENDAK

Do you remember this one? The Wild Things that so many of is grew uo with - that wonderful book that help forge  many a childhood dream and caper, and has inspired writers and artists ever since. It was a favourite of mine - and still is.

We are so very fortunate to have innour collection two editions from the increasingly rare boxed set that Harper and Row issued, with Sendak, in 1971. A limited run of these elegant sets were issued, not particularly as a commercial enterprise, but have now acquired cult status.

All the more special is that these are signed by Sendak - a true rarity indeed.

They can be viewed by appointment and on our website at www.artofthebook.co.uk. Our link is in the bio.
