There is something really special about music based on drones. Whether it’s the vocals of Pandit Pran Nath, the ARP 2500 of Eliane Radigue, or the nearly-blown amps of Sunn O))), by changing the listeners’s focus on details to one that favors flow, drones are uniquely capable of transporting our brains far far away. The music of Water Damage, the loudly droning Austin collective is a goddamn splendid example of how the process works. Using the motto, “Maximal Repetition Minimal Deviation,” Water Damage create glowing fields of drones that pretty much suck you right in and boil you alive. They prefer if each of their sonic ideas takes up a whole reel of tape, and once they start they don’t look back. Everything proceeds towards an imaginary end point that is only achieved when the tape starts flapping.

The members are all vets of various projects – Spray Paint, Black Eyes, USA/Mexico, more eaze, Thor & Friends, Marriage, Swans, SUR, Astral Spirits Records, among others. Their approach to the form is less front-loaded than most of their peers, and the surface of their sound is sometimes ruffled by aural events of an un-drone-like nature. But the main gush is usually a blend of harmonic tones and textures pointing towards a goal that is just out of ear-shot, just over the next bluff, and perhaps forever just beyond our reach.

Geologist is the nom-de-théâtre of Brian Weitz, whose pursuits have been an active part of the music underground since since he was 15, playing and working in alignment with an organic ensemble of friends that would one day choose to call what they were doing Animal Collective.

His new album Can I Get a Pack of Camel Lights? is an inspired ride through his past phases and stages, with traditional sounds, ritual moods, avant, prog-jazz, kraut, post-punk and minimalist vibes merging in electronic infinity.

Also happy to announce that opening the night will be Sinemis

Sinemis is the solo project of Turkish producer Sine Buyuka, who gently combines the ancestral Sufi music of her homeland with sophisticated techno-inflected ambient. Her first release was the single Medi in the Wind Layers compilation on 7K! in 2021, followed by her mini-album Dua on Injazero Records in November 2022. She took part in the Piano Day compilation with composer James Heather on Nils Frahm’s label Leiter in 2023. Her debut full-length Farewell was released in May 2025.

Sine Buyuka worked as a culture and arts journalist and hosted a radio show in her hometown Istanbul before moving to London in 2012. She currently runs the avantgarde label Injazero Records, hosts a monthly radio show on sound art station Resonance Extra and is a professor of electronic music at Guildhall.

Berlin-based electronic music artists Ah! Kosmos and Hainbach create experimental music to haunting and melancholic effect. Their patient and careful excavation of textures and tones treats noise and hum not as incidental artefacts, but as integral, living elements of the sonic realm. The intricate interplay of the rhythms and sounds of test equipment, analogue synthesizers, occasional piano accompaniment, and even processed vocals provide the soundtrack to a journey through in-between states and suspended time.

Pye Corner Audio is a British electronic music project by Martin Jenkins. He deals in an eerie, fragile strain of electronic music mixing the Radiophonic/Library music sound, sometimes with a post-punk influence that aligns him firmly with such seasoned hauntologists as Mordant Music, Belbury Poly, and The Advisory Circle.

PCA first came to attention with four volumes of Black Mill Tapes on his own label, Pye Corner Audio Transcription Services. Like his contemporaries Demdike Stare and Ghost Box, Martin seemed to be tapping into some hidden energy current, channeling spirits via electrical means. The pioneering transmissions of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop could be detected lurking within the music’s staticky swirl; so could the ominous throb of John Carpenter’s film soundtracks.

The work of BIG|BRAVE is ever-expanding. The breadth of their sound has encompassed a breathtaking array of dynamics and sonics. Their sound, guided by their indomitable exploratory spirit, exploits contrasts between extremity and subtlety. The trio’s singular, masterful sculpting of sonics into songcraft tucks layers of vulnerability into formidable storms. in grief or in hope is an innovative vision of electro-acoustic sound and emotive storytelling, an endless bounty of overwhelming distortions and devastating beauty.

Helm is Luke Younger, a sound artist and experimental musician based in London, working with a vast array of revolving instrumentation and abstract sound sources. Younger’s compositions build dense aural landscapes that incorporate elements of musique concrete and industrial music alongside hallucinatory drones and various acousmatic phenomena.

damsel Elysium is the mediator of Daēdah, a storm chaser, hypnagogic architect, and augur. Their main purpose is to bear witness, mediate and activate through mythos-making, welding with sound, light, subtle energy and embodied strategic dream blue prints.

Their first record released on AD 93, and through sonic mediums, they play with the seismic and the meteorological, creating maximalist tension through traditional instruments such as the violin, double bass, clarinet, piano and cello. More recently their voice has fuelled their work, using the voice as an instrument of phonetical discovery.

LEYA, the American duo of harpist Marilu Donovan and vocalist/violinist Adam Markiewicz, creates work within a singular world. Through a lone LP, a cassette, three EPs, a mixtape, an adult film, and a flurry of collaborations, they have traced far corners of the international underground while gracing major fashion runways, the home page of PornHub, and institutions like MoMA and the Palais de Tokyo. Cohorts include Eartheater, Actress, Ecco2K, Brooke Candy, Sega Bodega, james K, Varg2TM, claire rousay, Okay Kaya, Chanel Beads, HTRK and many more.

Crafted of three basic elements - detuned harp (designed in a system by Donovan for the project), operatic yet beguiling vocals (delivered in an unlikely range by Markiewicz), and the enmeshment of his violin sound within those vocals, the duo has sought to explore as widely as possible with their language, creating work that continually defies what might seem possible. The New York Times has called it “the auditory equivalent of awakening in the fog of a bad dream only to discover you’re still trapped in the nightmare,” while The Guardian describes “a titanic feat … music that sounds simultaneously 300 years old and somewhere from the distant future.”

ONE WEEK TO GO! September 3rd at The 100 Club - Širom + Nick Granata (Shovel Dance Collective)

Tickets on sale now via Dice

“Širom fashion maximalist avant-garde soundscapes from antique acoustic instruments like the balafon and hurdy gurdy. Their artfully rootless roots music makes an impassioned statement both aesthetically and, more opaquely, politically too.” — Uncut

The Slovenian avant-folk trio Širom are back with a sonically and thematically expansive 5th album; a thrilling follow-up to their widely praised 2022 release The Liquified Throne of Simplicity. Navigating almost two dozen instruments (some of which they’ve handcrafted), and hypnotic compositions that often exceed ten minutes in length, Ana Kravanja, Iztok Koren and Samo Kutin court patient, deep-dive listeners via intricately woven atmospheres, rhythms and sonics.

In the Wind of Night, Hard-Fallen Incantations Whisper is arguably the sharpest evocation yet of the group’s highly collective music process, enveloping rustic melodic folklore, outernational textures, non-linear song structures and dissonance, and a buzzing ambiance that can at times feel like an ecstatic ritual.

Few experimental ensembles from the last decade have created an ouevre as singular and unmistakable as that of this far-sighted trio from the disparate landscapes of Slovenia. Širom truly sound like no one else.

Nick Granata is a folk musician. They perform mostly as part of Shovel Dance Collective, a nine piece traditional folk band. Performing under their own name, they offer a hearty soup of traditional, pre-traditional, and non-traditional music played on pump organ, violin, and mouth.

NEW SHOW: November 24th Scott Fagan Playing the songs of Soon and South Atlantic Blues at St John On Bethnal Green

Tickets on sale tomorrow at 10am, save the ticket now via Dice

Scott Fagan’s New Album Soon, 55 Years in the Making, revives songs from his lost 1971 Broadway Rock Opera starring a young Richard Gere.

Soon has been a long time coming. The new album from Scott Fagan has been some 55 years in the making. Its songs, all drawn from the 1971 Broadway rock opera of the same name that Fagan conceived and wrote with songwriting partner Joe Kookoolis, were originally intended as the follow-up to his classic 1968 debut, South Atlantic Blues, but fate intervened.

Scott Fagan’s own path through the music industry is a tale in itself, one that found him rubbing shoulders with legendary Brill Building songwriting team Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman (“Viva Las Vegas”, “Save the Last Dance For Me”, “This Magic Moment”) who mentored and managed him at the start of his career, in the mid-60s; and sharing stages with Jimi Hendrix, Odetta, Ritchie Havens, and Tiny Tim. He had a succession of managers who promised to lay the world at his feet and came up empty-handed; deals with a series of labels—Columbia, Bang, Atco, Epic, and RCA—left a trail of breadcrumbs, in a series of singles that form a small catalogue of largely-unheard masterpieces. Somewhere along the way, he fathered a son, in acclaimed songwriter Stephin Merritt (The Magnetic Fields), although the two never met until 2012. Fagan also developed the musicians’ treatment and support program that became MusiCares. But recognition for his music eluded him, until a 2016 reissue of South Atlantic Blues was rightfully heralded as a lost classic.

Where Fagan’s debut dealt with the extreme poverty and privation of his childhood and teenage years, growing up in the US Virgin Islands, the songs he wrote for Soon (with Joe Kookolis) cast their net into the wider world. As a songwriter, Fagan was instilled with a purpose, to inform, agitate, and uplift.

Veteran producer, Shigeru Ishihara is an artist as multifaceted as he is boundary- breaking. Originally from Tokyo, he exploded onto Brighton’s underground music scene in the early 2000’s as DJ Scotch Egg, building a legion of dedicated followers who flocked to witness his energetic performances.

Armed with a Game Boy and a megaphone, he battered audiences with a blend of relentless riffs and confrontational guttural roar, later dubbed breakcore. Alongside, he created Wrong Music, a noise-oriented anything-goes event series with friends Henry Collins (aka Sh*tmat) and Matt (Roger Species).

Since relocating to Berlin in 2011, the melting pot has expanded ever further. His sound has been informed through collaborations with artists from all over the world: Turkish MC Ethnique Punch, Shanghai’s Gooooose (SVBKVLT), and bass music legend, Shackleton. Following a seminal artist residency in 2019 with Nyege Nyege in Kampala, Uganda, collaborations with a kaleidoscope of East-African talent opened a new portal. ‘TEWARI’ (2020) was released to much critical acclaim under his new Scotch Rolex alias.

20 years on from the release that started it all, KFC CORE (2005, Adadaat), DJ Scotch Egg has not only survived the test of time, but thrives in a universe all of his own: 8-bit gabber + breakcore, seething bass, irresistible melodies, and a good dose of stage-diving have made his high-energy performances a must-see for a new generation of extreme music lovers.

Fatboi Sharif

“Imagine a Cenobite raised on MF DOOM and Wu-Tang Clan, and you’ve got something approximating a rapper like Fatboi Sharif.” – FADER

“Sharif is one of the most distinct artists across any scene.” – Rolling Stone

The Garden State Gargoyle, Fatboi Sharif, is an American avant-garde Hip-Hop artist that is looking to take over the globe with his abstract lyricism, spine-chilling soundscapes, illuminating intensity, and his million-dollar smile. It is either the highest level or nothing for Sharif when it comes to putting out projects and performing on stage. He treats the live show as a spiritual experience where Sharif takes the crowd on a phenomenon in which a person perceives the world as if from a location outside their physical body. By the closing track he tells the crowd to involve themselves in a call & response that simply repeats “MY FAMILY!” because by the end of his set he’s grown a connection with the crowd that could only equate with that of your family.

Different channels of inspiration are always a must. Inspired by Sun Ra, Parliament Funkadelic, Alice Coltrane, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Ultramagnetic MC’s, Freestyle Fellowship, Cannibal Ox, Rob Zombie, Pig Destroyer just to name a few.
