What does Archiving African Art and Culture mean to you?

Do we appreciate African art and culture, or do we protect it? Because those aren’t the same thing.The real question isn’t whether we appreciate African art and culture. It’s whether that appreciation ever turns into the right action and practice, into preservation, credit, and care.

We explore this at , founded by Christian Cassiel, a cultural space in north London that celebrates traditional African and Caribbean art, design, and culture through a curated collection of objects and books. Archives like SEED bring cultural storytelling to life, connecting creatives, young people, and Black communities to what once was, what still is, and what can still be.

Keeping this link alive matters. It helps people learn, embed that archived knowledge into their creative practice, and even become part of the chain that carries these histories, traditions, and cultures forward for generations to come. At the end of the day, change starts with us. Archives are the accelerators, the reference to our past, and the link to what’s next.

Hey ANS Community! Join us for the second edition of UNFILTRD: For Us, By Us on 24 July at Canva Studio, Shoreditch 🤩

Theme: ARCHIVING (in African art and culture)
🗂️ Panel discussion, workshop & mixer

Together with the and NewComma | African & Diaspora Creative Marketplace , we’ll explore archiving as a cultural practice, looking at how memories, histories and identities are preserved, reimagined and passed on through African art and culture.

Expect thought-provoking conversations with archivists, artists and curators, a hands-on creative workshop where you’ll build your own personal archive through drawing, writing and collage, opportunities to connect with fellow creatives, plus the chance to win one of three archived African objects from seedarchives .

This is an evening of conversation, creativity and community that you won’t want to miss!🙂‍↔️
