Hannah’s paintings reveal themselves to us slowly, and there are often hidden elements not apparent on first view. This is ‘Reading Window’ and one of my favourite parts is the beautifully painted hand, as we catch sight of a person reading through the window.

There is a tangible intimacy to this painting, as we glimpse a private, quiet moment in someone’s interior. Whilst there is a sense of voyeurism, this is balanced by the reflections of trees outside and the abstraction which obscures our view, as light moves across the glass surface.

At 82 x 82 cm and framed in a gorgeous slim natural wood, this piece is a perfect size for bringing into your own interior. Swipe 👉🏼 to see the full piece framed up.

This immersive, large-scale painting is ‘Double Focus’ and it has gathered SO many admirers since we launched last week! There seems to be a magnetic force at work in this piece - as the viewer is drawn through a tunnel of trees towards bright, glowing light and an end point that we never quite reach.

If you look closely, you will notice groups of people walking amongst the trees. It’s a mirage of sorts - Hannah is looking through glass into a cafe, the trees merely reflections upon the window. Botanical gardens merge with the cafe interior, the natural and the urban meet each other in liminal space.

This evening it’s all about the delicious, painterly details. Here we zoom in on the marks and brushstrokes that are hard to appreciate from photos alone.

Hannah’s attention to reflections means that her works naturally blur the line between abstraction and representation. As light moves across a glass surface it obscures and fragments our view - transforming the imagery in front of us.

When we get this close to Hannah’s brushstrokes, her paintings appear more abstract than ever. We can see the faintness and delicacy of some her marks, alongside the impasto creamy texture of others. Swipe 👉🏼 to take a (very) close look at these exquisite oil paintings. And if you can, pop in to see them in the flesh this month!

Now online! Our new collection of ephemeral, light-drenched paintings by Hannah Davies can now be fully explored online from the cosy, delicious comfort of your home.

This is ‘Between Palms’ - one of the small treasures in this exhibition and an absolute favourite of mine. The light here disrupts the facade of a building - filtered through trees, luminous and wandering towards abstraction. I find the tension between the autumnal browns and cool, pale blues so compelling in this piece, and the whole collection.

Swipe 👉🏼 to see more of Hannah’s creamy brushstrokes and the gentle glow of this oil painting. The exhibition is on all month and can be explored online via the link in bio!

Let’s dive in to the sparkling water of these 3 beautiful paintings by Hannah Davies. Drenched in deep autumnal brown and sepia shades, Hannah starts slowly - using layer after layer of translucent oils to build the architectural forms which anchor these 3 works.

Creamy impressionist strokes and spots of luminous blue and green then depict light as it flickers across the water. We look out over an indoor pool, with an outdoor pool glimpsed in the background, before giving way to a view of the headland.

Hannah pays close attention to the illusions and imagery which the many reflections provide - glass surface all around and in front of us. Light sparkling everywhere we look - these paintings feel like dreams or memory. Certainly somewhere I’d love to be right now! 🙌🏼✨🍂

‘Pools in the Frame’
‘Pool Study’

Wow - we had such a lovely time with you all on Friday night! Thanks so much to everyone who joined us for the launch of ‘On Reflection’ by Hannah Davies.

It felt like magic was in the air. Alongside beautiful conversations about these Autumnal paintings, many serendipitous connections were discovered. Thanks to Hannah Davies- painter of window reflections for making the journey from Cornwall, and for the careful construction of an exquisite collection of works. A collection which feels very aligned to all that we love here at Glasshouse. What could be more perfect for us than paintings which capture fleeting moments of light flickering across glass?

The exhibition continues until the 1st November and has had a very enthusiastic response already. I’m working hard to get the works online, but in the meantime just drop me a line if you want to see the catalogue.
