This shouldn't exist anymore.

When we were clearing out my grandfather's house after he passed, I found this violin buried in a pile of rubbish, broken, on its way to the tip. Just another thing to be thrown away.

I almost didn't pick it up.

I'm so glad I did.

My grandfather was one of those invisible architects of a golden era — a session musician working the studios of London in the 1960s, when the city was the centre of the musical universe. He was in those rooms. He was part of those sessions. And at some point, he sat down with this violin, drew his bow across these strings, and played on one of the most celebrated albums ever committed to tape — the Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour.

This violin was there.

And then, somehow, it ended up in a box. Forgotten. No case, no care, no reverence for what it had witnessed. Just gathering dust for decades until the day it nearly got thrown out with everything else.

I couldn't let that happen.

I spent months repairing it — slowly piecing it back together, learning its cracks and its damage, trying to understand everything it had been through. And when it was whole again, I took it somewhere its maker never intended. I converted it into an electronic instrument. Pickups, signal chain, a completely new voice. Something strange and new growing out of something old and storied.

Now I play it.

A violin that stood in the room when The Beatles made history. That spent decades in a box. That was pulled from a rubbish pile and given a second life as something its original players couldn't have dreamed of.

Some things are worth saving.

One of the most common mistakes in home recording is "clipping" the master bus. If your mix is hitting 0dB before it even reaches the mastering stage, you are losing valuable detail and introducing harsh digital distortion. A professional mix needs headroom—usually around -6dB of space—for the mastering process to add warmth and punch.

Check out the before and after on this mix!

Sefi met with Jerby over Zoom a little while back to show him the before and after of his song "The Cross". This track in particular had a complex arrangement with lots and lots of different layers of instruments that all needed to fit together and have their own space.
