OPENING NEXT THURSDAY SEPT 3rd >>> Krish Nathaniels - Hosay Polycreed. 6-9pm
Hosay, is the de facto festival of Indo-Caribbean presence, developed out of the Shia Muslim ritual of Muharram carried to the Caribbean by South Asian indentured labourers in the late 19th century. In the building and procession of the tadjahs, the festival’s towering, tomb-like structures, Hindu rites joined Shia ones — even Christian groups participated. That pluralism was specific to its moment, and has since largely passed. Hosay Polycreed, extending research from a residency at Alice Yard, Port of Spain, takes that vanished window as its starting point. Five tadjah forms, built from cork, balsa, topsoil and mineral pigments will occupy the gallery, imagining new diasporic expressions that continue a tradition of embracing mixing and multiplicity — the errant, the mistaken, the “wrong.”
Please join us for a drink with the artist to view this exciting new body of work at the gallery, 250 Morning Lane, Hackney, London, E9 6RQ
