Last month, we welcomed a new cohort to ‘Catalyser’, our flagship artist development programme.

Led by Clod Ensemble’s Artistic Directors, this year’s intensive brought together 18 young people across London boroughs to focus on socially applied practice.

Participants explored how their creative skills can connect meaningfully with people and communities beyond traditional arts spaces, from healthcare and education settings to social care contexts. Sessions unpacked key areas including facilitation, workshop planning, producing, accessibility and creative health.

Thank you to all the associate artists and facilitators who generously shared their skillsets and ideas.

Until next year✨

‘Catalyser’ 2026 has been generously supported by the City Bridge Foundation, the D’oyly Carte Charitable Trust and The Finzi Trust.

This May, we’re back in the groove with The Black Saint & The Sinner Lady as part of Brighton Festival

The Black Saint & The Sinner Lady is a seminal album from jazz pioneer Charles Mingus. Mingus always envisioned dance accompanying his provocative masterpiece.

To honour that vision and bring Mingus’ music to life for a new generation, Clod Ensemble’s dynamic dancers join Nu Civilisation Orchestra, led by MOBO winner Peter Edwards and featuring their Artistic Director Gary Crosby OBE on bass, for a celebration of the sensuality and power of jazz.

Join us on 16 & 17 May. We invite you to share the floor with outstanding artists as we transform the stage into a vibrant cabaret venue. There are special £25 tickets for under 30s.

Celebrate the sensuality and power of jazz as we team up once again with Nu Civilisation Orchestra to present Charles Mingus’ iconic 1963 masterpiece, ‘The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady’.

Following sell-out runs at Shoreditch Town Hall and Barbican Centre, the production now brings its electrifying energy to 2026.

Lose yourself in the music, get up and dance or take a seat and soak up the atmosphere with a drink. Everyone, including wallflowers, is welcome.

Recommended for ages 16+.

‘Catalyser’ our flagship artist development programme, is returning for 2026✨

‘Catalyser’ is a free, three-week intensive skills and professional development programme specifically for young creatives aged 18 to 25. It gives participants the opportunity to work with Clod Ensemble’s Artistic Directors, Suzy Willson & Paul Clark, as well as a range of associate artists and guest facilitators.

This year’s ‘Catalyser’ will focus on socially engaged practice – using creative skills to work directly with people and communities outside of traditional arts spaces. We are looking for musicians, dancers, visual artists and performers with an interest in developing their skills to work in community, education and health settings.

📣 We’ve reached our target, help us keep going! 📣

Thanks to incredible support from people like you, we’ve smashed our £10k target and raised over £12,000 for so far. But there is still 24 hours to go.

Money raised from this point will allow us to sustain the project into 2028.

Our campaign closes tomorrow at midday. Will you help us to support more young people in state schools to excel at music making?

Supporting us to expand Ear Opener will allow us to develop new programmes for 9 state schools in Manchester, Birmingham and London – free or low-cost to students and teachers, and can be rolled out nationally in the future.

We’ll create new content for our YouTube channel (15k subscribers, free to access) and tons of new audio resources which can reach teachers and students nationwide.

The long-term aim: level the playing field between state and privately educated music students.

Our campaign is live now, and any donations will be doubled for the next week.

🎵 The Big Give: Ear Opener | We’re Live! 🎵

We’re raising £10,000 to expand Ear Opener – our pioneering music education project that’s levelling the playing field for state school music students. We have already raised £85,000 and this is our final fundraising push.

Thanks to our generous supporters, we now have £5,000 in match funds available for our appeal. This means that every donation you make for the next 7 days will be doubled until we reach our target.

🔸 Why now? 🔸
Music education is in crisis. 42% of secondary schools now enter no students for Music GCSE, and it’s fast becoming a privilege of the privately educated. Meanwhile, overstretched teachers tell us that composition – the creative heart of the GCSE – is the hardest part to teach, especially for students without private tuition or formal training.

Ear Opener provides free video tutorials, lesson plans and in-person mentoring that work across all genres. We meet students where they are at, using the music they actually listen to. Our evidence shows that students with little formal training, no expensive equipment, and a passion for any genre of music can thrive in composition.
