Contemporary British Painting

Contemporary British Painting Contemporary British Painting presents a new platform for contemporary painting in the UK with events, exhibitions and an art prize.

Contemporary British Painting (also known as CBP) is an artist led organisation which explores and promotes current trends in British painting through group exhibitions, talks, publications, and by placing paintings in art museums. The group is run entirely by volunteers from within the membership. We founded the The Contemporary British Painting Prize in 2016, an annual prize promoting the best o

f contemporary painting produced in the UK. Read more about the Contemporary British Painting Prize here. Our members represent some of the most exciting emerging and award winning painting in the UK today and include John Moores Prize winners Paula MacArthur, Nicholas Middleton, Mandy Payne and Narbi Price, Jonathan Vickers Award winner Natalie Dowse, British Academy awardee James Quin, Griffin Prize exhibitor Matthew Krishanu, Venice Biennale exhibitor Phil Illingworth, and Joanna Whittle, winner of the Valeria Sykes Award at the New Light Prize.

Palpable
Until 9th July

This show features artists who often use elements of playful discipline, and a hunger to push that little bit further out into the abyss. Where the palpable and the real collide. Pushing contemplation, idea and medium both for themselves, and also for the viewer.

The show opens with a PV on 9th July and runs until 23rd July.

SLIP exhibition opens today in Salford, and brings together ten artists whose practices explore the boundaries and possibilities of paint, extending beyond the flat surface and into clay.
Borrowing from the phrase often attributed to Peter Voulkos - “Clay is Just Thick Paint” - the exhibition considers ceramic surfaces as sites for painterly experimentation, where painting and sculpture converge: wet clay, slips, and glazes are built up and worked into expressive forms in which colour, texture, and gesture become inseparable. Together, they propose a porous boundary between disciplines, where painting does not end at the edge of the canvas but continues, materially and spatially, into the round.

Artists: Hannah Brown, Roberta Cialfi, Charlie Duck, Rebecca Elves, Marielle Heir,
Linda Hemmersbach, Bethan Lloyd Worthington, Ruth Murray, Matthew Richardson, Lottie Stoddart.
