Contemporary British Painting Contemporary British Painting presents a new platform for contemporary painting in the UK with events, exhibitions and an art prize.

Contemporary British Painting (also known as CBP) is an artist led organisation which explores and promotes current trends in British painting through group exhibitions, talks, publications, and by placing paintings in art museums. The group is run entirely by volunteers from within the membership. We founded the The Contemporary British Painting Prize in 2016, an annual prize promoting the best o

Our members represent some of the most exciting emerging and award winning painting in the UK today and include John Moores Prize winners Paula MacArthur, Nicholas Middleton, Mandy Payne and Narbi Price, Jonathan Vickers Award winner Natalie Dowse, British Academy awardee James Quin, Griffin Prize exhibitor Matthew Krishanu, Venice Biennale exhibitor Phil Illingworth, and Joanna Whittle, winner of the Valeria Sykes Award at the New Light Prize.

Curated by Martin Mayorga Maison Martin Mayorga , this exhibition brings together two distinct artistic practices exploring colour, materiality and perception.

Jing Su is a London-based multimedia artist whose feminist practice explores female bodily autonomy and the social structures shaping women’s lives.

Lisa Denyer is a British abstract painter whose layered works explore colour, texture and materiality through geometric structure and experimentation.

The Football Art Prize 2026 is currently
open at Millennium Gallery Sheffield Museums and we had the opportunity to pop by and have a look, such as it is with three CBP members included in the selection!

The Football Art Prize contains over 75 works from around 900 entries submitted by artists across the UK and internationally. The exhibition continues until 13th September and will move to the National Football Museum, Manchester from November 2026 - February 2027. National Football Museum

2& 3 Alina Akbar, ‘ Footwork’, 2025, 1st Prize Winner, “This film brings together football freestyle and Kathak dance through rhythm, movement and sound. Working with members of the British South Asian diaspora, it explores the similarities between different forms of footwork and performance. While access to classical dance training has often been limited to a small number of people, football freestyle is a skill that many learn independently in parks, streets and back gardens. By placing these practices side by side, the film challenges ideas about training, creativity and artistic recognition.” (exhibition text)

Conor Rogers' Betting Slip series is an ongoing body of work in which paintings are made directly onto betting slips. Each piece reflects on everyday rituals and the communities and cultural identities connected to betting within contemporary British life. The series explores themes such as stereotypes, class, masculinity, history and tradition. By focusing on a familiar but often overlooked object, the works reframe places of betting as spaces shaped by routine, belief and shared behaviour. (exhibition text)

Forty-seven painters. Forty seven ways of making. One exhibition.

Unpeeled is the first London exhibition by painter painter, a collective of 47 artists formed through
the Turps Banana Correspondence Course 2025/26, one of the UK's leading independent painting
programmes.

Developed through a year of critical dialogue and exchange, the exhibition presents new work by
painters at different stages of their careers, each with their own approach. As a collective, painter
painter is shaped by conversation as much as by individual studio practice. Rather than proposing
a single theme or aesthetic, Unpeeled embraces plurality, creating space for diverse ways of
making, visual thinking and looking.

The exhibition takes place at Downstairs at The Department Store in Brixton, London, an
award-winning redevelopment by architects Squire & Partners. Originally built in 1906 as an
annexe to Bon Marché, the restored Brixton landmark now houses a thriving community of artists,
designers, makers and creative practitioners, providing a fitting setting for an exhibition grounded in dialogue, experimentation and contemporary studio practice.
