5 things to spot in Paulo Nimer Pjota, Encantados 🔎

1. Music - Pjota samples and remixes imagery, filling his paintings with imagined instruments and creatures that encourage us to wonder what Pjota’s fantasy orchestra sounds like.

2. Vases - Repeated throughout his work, vases act as symbolic containers of life and memory, linking ancient traditions with contemporary imagery.

3. Butterflies - Butterflies can refer to the soul, transformation, renewal and rebirth, and in different cultures represent joy, love and the spirits of the deceased.

4. Foreboding - Although his paintings are colourful and playful on the surface, danger, predation, and entrapment are important undercurrents throughout the work in the show.

5. Moving beyond myths - Drawing from mythology, personal memory and visual archives, Pjota remixes past and present into new work, which in some ways is like a cabinet-of-curiosities.

See Encantados at SLG until 23 August

"I use clay as language and a grounding tool. They aren’t objects so much as presences that occupy space the way a living thing does." - Ranti Bam

Ranti Bam’s practice is rooted in a deep engagement with clay, a material she views as a living entity. For Bam, clay is the most primal of all materials: earth and water shaped by hand and transformed by the fire of the kiln. She connects this process to the idea of the primal feminine, an instinctive source of creation and wildness that exists within all of us.

Free to visit at the SLG’s Fire Station Galleries until 23 August 2026.

Explore Paulo Nimer Pjota's celestial, botanical and mythical worlds at SLG this summer.

The exhibition is titled 'Encantados',which translates to 'enchanted' in Portuguese. It draws on the dual definitions of the word, which can refer to being charmed and filled with delight, but also to a state of being placed under a spell or bewitched.

Pjota’s works leave the viewer to make their own sense of his fantastical scenes.

Free to visit, Wed-Sun, until 23 Aug.
