Frieze has begun!

🎨 This week we’re heading to Frieze London, joining our friends on the Allied Editions booth.

We'll be sharing new editions by Paulo Nimer Pjota and David Austen, as well as works by Chila Burman Kumari and Yinka Shonibare, with proceeds from sales directly supporting our work, both with artists and with our local communities.

🕰️ Special opening hours: From Tues-Sun, 11am-6pm except for late opening on Wed 11am-9pm

What do buildings tell us about the world we live in? What happens when those buildings start to fall apart?

Writer and curator, Hettie Judah takes a closer look at Monika Sosnowska: Weight of Matter at the South London Gallery, where staircases bend, structures collapse and familiar forms become something unexpected.

Drawing on the architecture of Warsaw, Sosnowska transforms familiar structures, materials and forms, reflecting on the legacy of modernism and the ideals embedded within it.

The large-scale pieces created by Sosnowska begin as reference images. These she uses to create intricate paper models which are turned into sculpture using industrial materials.

Talk: ‘Weight of Matter’ - 1 Week to go 🎤

Join curator Natalia Sielewicz and architect Tom Emerson in conversation with the SLG’s Director, Margot Heller at Camberwell College of Arts, focusing on Monika Sosnowska’s current exhibition Weight of Matter and her wider artistic practice.

Together, they’ll explore Sosnowska’s sculptural practice and its relationship to architecture, modernism, urban transformation and the built environment, from the warped structures of ‘Weight of Matter’ to the histories and spaces that have informed them.

Monika Sosnowska: Weight of Matter | ★★★★ – Time Out

Monika Sosnowska is best known for creating large-scale pieces using industrial materials but her ideas are first developed through intricate paper models. Rarely seen outside the studio, these small-scale maquettes are being shown for the first time in London as part of the exhibition, Weight of Matter.

See the models alongside monumental sculptures across the Main Gallery and Fire Station.

As Dovecot approach the opening of Beyond Bayeux: Tapestry Now at Guildhall Art Gallery, we're reflecting on Christina Kimeze's first ever textile work, Blue Door (2024), presented as part of Between Wood and Wheel at the South London Gallery.

Created in collaboration with Dovecot Studios, the tapestry translated Kimeze's luminous painting into woven form, offering a new way to experience the dreamlike worlds at the heart of her practice.

“It’s the feeling you have when your body stays on the ground, but your soul is flying. I thought it was really beautiful.” - Christina Kimeze

Across the exhibition, Kimeze explored ideas of freedom, flight and escape through radiant, dreamlike scenes that hover between memory and imagination. Her figures inhabit in-between spaces, inviting us to reflect on our inner lives and the shifting relationship between thoughts, feelings and memories.
