The Minister of State, Minister for Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Mr Ahmed Attaf, took part in the high-level meeting dedicated to the twenty-fifth anniversary of the adoption of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action on the elimination of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance, held as part of the high-level week of the eighty-first session of the United Nations General Assembly.

In his address on this occasion, the Minister of State emphasised that commemorating this anniversary provides an opportunity to renew the international community’s commitment to upholding human dignity, consolidating equality and combating all forms of racism and discrimination. He stressed that fulfilling the Durban Declaration requires genuine political will and comprehensive solidarity, free from selectivity and double standards.

Mr Ahmed Attaf also called for the adoption of a structural and comprehensive approach to restorative justice, as a path towards reconciliation, fairness and mutual respect, and for ensuring that technology and the digital space are harnessed to serve humanity, and that their use in spreading hate speech and racism or infringing upon human dignity and rights is prevented.

شارك وزير الدولة، وزير الشؤون الخارجية والجالية الوطنية بالخارج والشؤون الإفريقية، السيد أحمد عطاف، في الاجتماع رفيع المستوى المخصص للذكرى الخامسة والعشرين لاعتماد إعلان وبرنامج عمل ديربان المتعلّق بالقضاء على العنصرية والتمييز العنصري وكره الأجانب وما يتّصل بذلك من تعصب، وذلك في إطار الأسبوع رفيع المستوى للدورة الحادية والثمانين للجمعية العامة للأمم المتحدة.

وفي الكلمة التي ألقاها بهذه المناسبة، أكد وزير الدولة أن إحياء هذه الذكرى يشكل مناسبة لتجديد التزام المجتمع الدولي بصون الكرامة الإنسانية وترسيخ المساواة ومكافحة جميع أشكال العنصرية والتمييز، مشددا على أن الوفاء بإعلان ديربان يقتضي توفر إرادة سياسية حقيقية وتضامنا شاملا، بعيدا عن الانتقائية وازدواجية المعايير.

كما دعا السيد أحمد عطاف إلى اعتماد مقاربة هيكلية وشاملة للعدالة التعويضية، باعتبارها طريقا نحو المصالحة والإنصاف والاحترام المتبادل، وإلى ضمان تسخير التكنولوجيا والفضاء الرقمي لخدمة الإنسان، ومنع استخدامهما في نشر خطاب الكراهية والعنصرية أو المساس بكرامة الإنسان وحقوقه.

The general debate sessions of the High-Level Week of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly began yesterday in New York. This year’s proceedings are centred on the theme ‘Restoring Trust and Managing Transformation: The United Nations for All’.
Discussions during this UN event are expected to focus on a range of issues and challenges facing the international community, particularly matters relating to peace and security in various regions of the world, and a renewed commitment to multilateralism, especially in light of the continuing practices that undermine international law, human rights and international economic cooperation, the difficulties faced by developing countries in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as the challenges arising from climate change and those linked to the rapid proliferation of artificial intelligence systems.
Algeria is participating in this week’s high-level meeting with a delegation led by the Minister of State, Minister for Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Mr Ahmed Attaf,
This participation forms part of Algeria’s steadfast commitment, under the leadership of the President of the Republic, Mr Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to strengthening multilateral cooperation and promoting fair and sustainable solutions to the various challenges and crises facing the regional and international arenas, as well as highlighting the strenuous efforts Algeria is making at the national level in the economic and social spheres, particularly in accelerating the energy transition, managing water resources, and in the fields of health, education and higher education, alongside the initiatives it has launched to promote peace, security and development in many countries of the Sahel and in Africa in general.
Algeria’s participation in this UN event is expected to involve a series of meetings, gatherings and consultations with a number of sister and friendly nations, as well as senior UN officials, with the aim of continuing coordination and exchanging views on the issues on the agenda of the current session of the General Assembly, and to highlight the role Algeria plays, both regionally and internationally, in promoting peace, stability and development.

The Minister of State, Minister for Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Mr Ahmed Attaf, took part in the consultative meeting of Arab Foreign Ministers, where he emphasised the need to revitalise joint Arab action in an international context characterised by selectivity in the application of international resolutions, and in which the countries of the region are paying the price for the absence of political solutions.
The Minister of State emphasised the importance of working to bring the Palestinian cause back to the forefront of the international agenda, ensuring it is not reduced to its humanitarian dimension, and countering measures aimed at undermining the possibility of establishing a Palestinian state in accordance with international law.
Mr Ahmed Attaf also reiterated Algeria’s rejection of the transformation of the Arab region into a theatre for proxy wars, particularly in light of the escalation currently taking place in the Arabian Gulf region. He emphasised the urgent need to address the crises afflicting Sudan, Yemen, Somalia and Libya, to preserve their unity, to support national political solutions, and to reject external interference in their affairs.
