The Embassy of Algeria in London commemorates
the National MujahidDay
marking the dual anniversary of
the North Constantine Offensive (20 August 1955)
and the Soummam Conference (20 August 1955)

The Embassy of Algeria in London commemorated the National Mujahid Day, marking the dual anniversary of the North Constantine Offensive (20 August 1955) and the Soummam Congress (20 August 1955).
The two events hold great symbolic significance in the struggle for independence. The North Constantine Offensive gave the revolution a popular dimension as the Algerian people rallied around their leadership in Zone II, while the Soummam Congress marked the revolution's attainment of political and organisational maturity.
On the 20thAugust 1955, not long after the outbreak of the triumphant liberation revolution on 1stNovember 1954, ZighoudYoucef, commander of the North Constantine region (Zone II), and his deputy Lakhdar Ben Tobbal, planned simultaneous, large-scale attacks against police stations, gendarmerie barracks, colonial infrastructure and settler outposts within the zone. The objective of these attacks was to prevent the revolution from being stifled in its infancy and to break the siege surrounding the Aurès region, where the uprising had begun.
However, the occupation army’s retaliation for these attacks was brutal, collective, and indiscriminate; thousands of civilians fell victim to the savagery of the occupation forces and were dumped into mass graves by bulldozers. Despite the heavy price paid, these attacks succeeded in achieving their objectives and contributed to placing the Algerian cause on the agenda of the UN General Assembly in September 1955, recognising it as a matter of national liberation rather than an internal French affair

The Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Lounes Magramane, co-chaired yesterday , 30 July 2026, in the Italian capital Rome, alongside his Italian counterpart, Mr Riccardo Guariglia, the proceedings of the fifth session of the Algerian-Italian Strategic Dialogue on bilateral relations and broader political and security issues.
This session, which brought together representatives from various sectors and bodies on both sides, forms part of the regular political consultation mechanism between the two countries. It provided a fresh opportunity to assess the progress of bilateral cooperation in various fields and to review achievements since the previous session held in Algeria in June 2025, in light of the outcomes adopted during the Italian Prime Minister’s recent official visit to Algeria in March 2026 and the fifth intergovernmental summit held in Rome in July 2025.
The proceedings provided an opportunity to assess various aspects of bilateral cooperation, particularly in the political, security, economic, energy, agricultural, industrial and cultural fields, with both sides noting with satisfaction the positive results achieved on a number of key issues. They also discussed ways to advance the strategic partnership between the two countries towards promising prospects, in line with the measures adopted by the President of the Republic, Mr Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and the Italian Prime Minister, Ms Giorgia Meloni.
In this regard, both sides commended the progress made in implementing the ‘Mattei’ plan and reaffirmed their commitment to accelerating the implementation of joint strategic projects that will establish a new model of cooperation between the two shores of the Mediterranean.
During the same session, the two sides discussed the current regional and international situation, exchanging views on developments in the Mediterranean, Libya, Western Sahara and the Sahel region, as well as the Middle East, reaffirming their commitment to peaceful solutions to conflicts in accordance with the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter.
The proceedings concluded with a reaffirmation of the shared determination to continue strengthening the strategic partnership, to implement the recommendations arising from it, and to prepare for upcoming events, foremost among which is the Sixth High-Level Algerian-Italian Intergovernmental Summit, scheduled to take place next year in the capital, Algiers.

The Ambassador of Algeria to the United Kingdom attends signing ceremony of Memorandum of Understanding between El Oued University and Regent’s University

On Tuesday 28thJuly 2026, the Ambassador of Algeria to the United Kingdom attended the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Echahid Hamma Lakhdar University (El Oued University) and Regent’s University London, held at the latter's headquarters.

The signed MoU aims to foster cooperation between the two universities, particularly in the field of English language training for academics and researchers.

The agreement was signed by Mr. Omar Farhati, Rector of El Oued University, and Mr. Geoff Smith, Head of Regent’s University. The ceremony was attended by members of the administrative and training teams from both Regent’s University and the Regent’s English Language School, as well as a number of Algerian professors and researchers currently undertaking short-term internships and English language training at Regent’s University.

In his remarks on this occasion, the Ambassador commended the step taken by the two universities in their bilateral cooperation, noting that it aligns with Algeria’s decision to select the United Kingdom as a primary partner in education, specifically regarding English language training, as part of the comprehensive education sector strategy to adopt English as a language of instruction.

This year, Regent’s University hosted several groups of academics from the University of El Oued, representing various disciplines, who participated in short-term English language training as part of a program designed to train one hundred academics.

The signed memorandum of understanding marks the culmination of significant joint bilateral activity undertaken by the administrations of both universities in recent years.
