Makings and Musings

Makings and Musings I draw every day and teach others to do the same. In online courses and my creative community.

with Makings and Musings I run creative courses, workshops and host a creative community. You can also find my illustration work here, buy originals and prints in my shop and view my portfolio.

I teach lots of ‘mixed media’ in my community. It means, bring what you have and play along. It means, we start with watercolours and add other mediums on top. It means we play, experiment and make a bit of a mess. I find it lots of fun to do and I love seeing how everyone’s artwork looks unique at the end of the class!

The white page can feel so intimidating, can't it?

It's almost as if the moment you open your sketchbook, your brain starts telling you that whatever you create has to be good.

Whenever I feel like that, I do the exact opposite.

I make a mess.

I'll put down some random colours, make a few splashes, scribble some marks, glue something into my sketchbook... anything to take away that pressure of the perfect first mark.

Once the page isn't white anymore, it suddenly feels much easier to keep going.

Although I teach people how to draw and paint, what I really love teaching is how to let go of perfectionism.

How to experiment without worrying whether it's 'right'.

How to play with different art materials and discover what you enjoy.

Because that's where the magic happens. Not when you're trying to make the perfect piece, but when you're curious enough to see what happens next.

So if you've been staring at a blank page today, don't wait for inspiration.

Just make the first messy mark. 💛

The Theme this month is Texture and Marks and for the first live class we are painting Seashells in Watercolours. The Class will take place on zoom - is included in my Creative community Membership (£17 a month) and the recording will be shared in the library after.

The library already has loads (160) recordings and I have about 400 recordings in total so every week I am adding more!

Believe me, I know! however, if you you follow a few simple steps it will be much easier.

1- keep your materials simple
2- keep your materials close
3- Pick a theme and stick to it for a while

In my sketchhub we make 5 sketches a week, each 5-10 minutes long. You can try the first month FREE.
