‘Solace’ takes its cue from something we all reach for, the relief, peace or support that makes a hard moment easier to carry. The piece sits with that idea, and asks where we might find that relief when we least expect it.

Set in a warm, earthy yellow against a charcoal black, the letters settle and sway across the panel, each stroke carrying its own tilt and weight. A quiet study in comfort, found in the places we don’t always think to look.

The word itself is the instruction. ‘Now’ is a study in presence, a reminder that the moment in front of us may be the only one we are given, and reason enough to stop overthinking what comes next.

A piece that spans nearly 4 metres, created from a chalk based pigment Stranger makes himself, gathered from the South Downs where he lives. Every pit and mark that surfaces along the way is left as it falls, unplanned, a little controlled chaos held inside the letterform.

Highlights from the private view of ‘Growth’ by Gary Stranger.

Last night, we opened our doors to mark the beginning of Stranger’s second solo exhibition with Woodbury House. Collectors, artists and guests gathered as the evening went on with a live piano performance, catalogues signed, old friendships renewed and new ones made.

‘Growth’ is now open to the public, on view through 30th September, during normal gallery hours.

‘Growth’ by Gary Stranger.

We are proud to present this landmark exhibition, opening to the public from 10:00 tomorrow.

‘Growth’ is Stranger’s second solo exhibition with the gallery, and the most personal body of work of his career: over thirty new pieces spanning canvases approaching four metres to solar pyrography works small enough to hold in the palm of a hand. Drawing on the landscape he walks, from the chalk of the South Downs to the colours of the Sussex coast, each piece carries a single considered word, three decades of precision now allowed to loosen.

With the opening drawing near, we spotlight ‘Growth’, the piece that lends the exhibition its name, worked in a chalk based acrylic drawn from the landscape Stranger walks.

For Stranger, the natural environment he immerses himself in stands as a constant reminder of growth in its most literal sense, and in turn, a prompt to self-reflect and grow where it is needed.

A first glimpse of the exhibition, ahead of its opening to the public later this week.
