I usually spend several days carefully sewing my crocheted and knitted corals onto the stretched canvas. I always try to stitch them as securely as possible so none of them will ever fall off — that would be so embarrassing! 😅

I did not have time to finish this crochet coral reef wall hanging back in December, so it had to wait. Now I am finally back to it. I hope I will have all the stitching finished in about a week.

You have probably noticed that so many of my coral reef artworks include crocheted, knitted, stitched, felted, painted sponges, pipe organ and tube corals 😊

I love their shapes and colours.  They can look so similar at first glance  - tubes, vases, sacs, pore-covered textures… They can live on the same reefs, attached to the substrate, and do not move around.  BUT… they are completely different organisms. Sponges are simple, filter-feeding, with no true tissues. Corals are complex, colonial stinging animals related to jellyfish. How amazing is that? Fascinating creatures 😀... Coral reefs are full of look-alikes with totally different stories 😁

Have any of you ever tried to make anything with seaweed yarns? This is my first attempt 🙂. For a while I was thinking it would be great to make a rather big crochet coral reef artwork entirely from seaweed yarn (or at least, mostly from seaweed), perhaps for an organization that is involved in coral preservation or ocean protection. So I contacted .co.uk I was soooo exited when three seaweed yarns from them arrived last week - machine spun, DK and chunky. Very interesting yarns to work with 😁.

Sold… My biggest white crochet coral reef wall hanging / embroidered canvas so far 😀. This crochet creation is about 92cm x 65 cm (36in x 26in). Mostly crochet, a bit of knitting and embroidery 😀.
