Daniel Shelvey is an opera singer who has worked with companies such as Glyndebourne, Scottish Opera and Ruhrtriennale festival 🤘🏼

Dan joined 'Displaced' in the second phase of Research & Development in September 2024. He brought so much to the character of Francis and our exploration around the history and visibility of q***r people at the time the opera is set (1913).

HERE'S TO THE LIZZIE LINE! 💜

Woolwich's inaccessible location and falling match day crowds are two of the main reasons Henry Norris moved (Woolwich) Arsenal FC to Highbury in 1913.

The question is, had the Elizabeth line existed back then, would Arsenal players today be running out to "South-East London foreverrrr" and would it be acceptable to slip an extra syllable into Louis Dunford's song?

Probably not.

WOOLWICH FUN FACTS!

No.2 - Woolwich Ferry is the only vehicle ferry across the Thames ⛴

It's FREE and is thought to have started in 1308, or even earlier.

Our creative director Hannah (who took this 📸) likes to walk along the river at dusk listening to Max Richter, watching the two ferries cross each other like they're dancing together.

That's totally normal behaviour, right.

Suniel is a musician, presenter, actor, football coach, and all round legend 🙌🏽

He first worked with our co-founders PJ and Hannah on 'Gods of The Game' for Sky Arts back in 2022, when he was in the football fan chorus and accompanying TV documentary 'Sing When You're Winning'.

Suniel has been part of 'Displaced' since the first phase of Research & Development in 2023 and has also worked with Hannah in her role as Fans for Diversity Campaign manager at the Football Supporters' Association, writing & performing a specially commissioned spoken word piece about belonging in football.

'Displaced' will have a mixed chorus of traditionally trained singers and singers who come through our 9 month community engagement programme.

Guy Fawkes was famously hanged for his part in the foiled Gunpowder Plot to blow up the House of Lords on 5th November 1605.

Our brand new opera 'Displaced' is set in 1913 in a munitions factory in Woolwich, home to lots of gunpowder! As our characters fight boldly for what they believe in, how far are they prepared to go?

WOOLWICH FUN FACTS!

No.1 - football club was born in Woolwich ⚽️

In 1886, munitions workers at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich founded the club as Dial Square, later changing the name to Woolwich Arsenal and finally 'Arsenal' - two years after leaving Woolwich and moving north to Highbury.

This story, which has more twists and turns than Martinelli on a good day, is the inspiration for our new opera 'Displaced' - set in 1913 during Woolwich Arsenal's last season playing in Plumstead at The Manor Ground.
