Would you believe that this artwork is 1.8 million times smaller than the real Earth 🤯

Artist Luke Jerram created Gaia using a detailed NASA image of the Earth’s surface because he wanted people to, in his words, ‘see the Earth as if from space; an incredibly beautiful and precious place. An ecosystem we urgently need to look after – our only home.’

‘This year’s Meltdown festival has been an incredibly special experience I'll never forget. I'm so grateful to every artist who was part of the line-up for sharing their talent, generosity and creativity, and I'm incredibly thankful to the Southbank Centre for welcoming me into a space that has long been a home to unforgettable cultural experiences. Music brings people together and that has been at the heart of these past eleven days. Thank you to everyone who performed, everyone behind the scenes, and everyone who came along and made it truly unforgettable.’

We are deeply saddened by the passing of iconic artist David Hockney 💙 A message from our artistic director Mark Ball:

💬 'We are deeply saddened by the news that David Hockney has passed away. David Hockney wasn't just a titan of British art; he was a cultural pioneer whose visionary approach to colour, perspective, and medium completely transformed how we see the world.

'The Southbank Centre is incredibly proud to have shared a long, dynamic history with him, charting his extraordinary career across several decades. He made his debut with us at the Hayward Gallery back in 1969 as part of that landmark Pop Art group exhibition, and over the years, his restless creative evolution returned to our stages and galleries time and again. From hosting Hockney’s Photographs in 1983 to his spectacular 1985 exhibition, Hockney Paints the Stage, and his feature in 2007’s The Painting of Modern Life, he has constantly pushed contemporary culture into new and unexpected directions.

'Hockney understood what it means to truly connect with people through art and he will continue to inspire generations of people to come.'
