BRAZIL ON FILM 🇧🇷 major season at the continues through June. Join us for the screening of The Woman of Everyone, a delirious anti-heroine tears through São Paulo, in a defining classic of Brazil’s Cinema Marginal.

THE WOMAN OF EVERYONE | A MULHER DE TODOS
Dir. Rogério Sganzerla, 1969 🇧🇷

Ignez stuns as Ângela Carne e Osso (“Angela Meat and Bone”), a free-spirited woman who
drifts through lovers and crimes in a delirious São Paulo shaped by consumer culture and
repression. Made under the military dictatorship and the subject of censorship, Sganzerla’s
film became a key work of Cinema Marginal – a radical, low-budget movement that rejected
commercial cinema and political orthodoxy. It’s a provocative pop-art attack on respectability
and narrative form

It has been a year since these films, so dear to our hearts, began their tour in London and across the UK: Camila, Yo, la peor de todas (I, the Worst of All), Señora de nadie (Nobody’s Wife) and Miss Mary, directed by unique and innovative Argentinian filmmaker María Luisa Bemberg, and produced by great Lita Stantic. Their vision remains as powerful as ever.

Daring to Dare: The Films of María Luisa Bemberg 🇦🇷 has come to an end, and we are deeply grateful to the venues and festivals that hosted us and the films, to the new friends and colleagues we have met along the way, and to everyone who has shared their love for these films and for the women both in front of and behind the camera.

Special thanks to some people and institutions who have been doing an immense job keeping María Luisa Bemberg’s legacy alive, and were fundamental in making Daring to Dare happen: Lita Stantic, Sebastián Pérez, Julia Kratje, Museo del Cine Pablo Ducrós Hicken, and María Luisa Bemberg’s family.

Viva Bemberg! Viva Camila! Viva Leonor! Viva Juana! Viva Mary!

🤍

time.

The grand finale of our heart project DARING TO DARE: The Films of María Luisa Bemberg is coming to ❤️‍🩹

NOBODY’S WIFE (1982)
📅 21 May, 6.10pm

After being betrayed by her husband, Leonor embarks on a quest for self-discovery and begins to live new experiences.

MISS MARY (1986)
📅 26 May, 6.00pm

Julie Christie is Miss Mary, an English governess who travels to Argentina in the late 1930s to raise the children of an aristocratic and chaotic family.

📍The Garden Cinema, London WC2B 5PQ

Bemberg had a gift for telling meaningful stories, focusing on the lives and struggles of women while painting a picture of Argentina’s political context. These screenings form part of a wider season commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Argentinian coup, running from 8 May to 19 June at The Garden Cinema. The programme explores how Argentinian society has grappled with the aftermath of the coup in through their cinematic storytelling.

Belén, feminist drama feature is one of this year’s most acclaimed Argentinian films and Argentina’s entry for the Oscars, opens in the UK and Ireland cinemas on 7 November. 🎞️

Belén
Dir. Dolores Fonzi 🇦🇷 2025

💚 Belén is based on the true story that sparked an international movement, chronicling the harrowing case of Julieta, a young woman falsely accused of infanticide after having an spontaneous abortion, and Soledad Deza, the fearless lawyer who takes on the highly controversial, explosive case.

‘While the film makes an unavoidable political statement – justified, as the Belen case kick-started a movement which ended in the legalisation of abortion in Argentina in 2020 – it never becomes a mere polemic. It is ultimately a heartfelt, inspiring story about ordinary people who choose to stand up and make a change – and a reminder that, for so many women, the fight goes on.‘ Nikki Baughan for Screendaily

Catch Belén on the big screen in selected cinemas in London and beyond from November 7

📅 7.11 📍 ICA Cinema, London
