We are thrilled to announce the following four artists will be going to Norway for our next round of residencies with House of Hulda (House of Hulda - Artist Retreat). ⁠

Congratulations to Jane Hayes Greenwood (Jane Hayes Greenwood), Rhian Harris-Mussi (), Daniel Coleman (Daniel Coleman) and Sophie Tebbs (Sophie Tebbs). ⁠

“Great art finds something universal within its specific subject. At most artists’ hands, the landscape becomes a medium through which to communicate a broader reflection or emotion. The landscape of Andøya, an Arctic island situated on the northern tip of Norway’s Vesterålen archipelago – with its low, wide sky and long, climactic sunsets – is a particularly special one. The artists who will be travelling here for the forthcoming residency share a fascination with landscape, a subject whose resonances vary wildly between each artist.” - Phin Jennings (Phin Jennings)⁠, Head Curator at Rise Art

We are pleased to present a new body of work by Deborah Lerner, shown by London-based arts enterprise Particular Ideas. ⁠
⁠
Lerner’s paintings explore the material possibilities of paint and how it can be used to raise broader questions around the human experience.

Deeply affected by Jack Whitten’s notion of using “formal as a means to arrive at subject”, Lerner allows surface, edge, colour, and composition to bring into being characteristics often lacking within our contemporary society.

Eschewing fixed narratives, the work instead invites sustained attention, embracing ambiguity and the coexistence of seemingly contradictory ideas.

Rooted in close observation of the everyday, Lerner’s practice is informed by the overlooked textures of the urban environment, where bubble wrap, textured wallpaper and other found materials become as significant as brushes or palette knives.

Driven by an engagement with labour, utility and material culture, Eva Dixon explores homo-eroticism in sport and p**n, the space race, lesbianism, and industry, working across painting, sculpture, and assemblage.⁠

The artist repurposes military textiles, rip-stop nylon, emergency blankets, industrial hardware and discarded functional materials, treating the studio as a site of physical experimentation where making is led by the demands of the work itself. ⁠
⁠
Discreet and sometimes racy advertisements inform the next stages of Dixon’s practice and speak to the loss of historical artefacts in the wider LGBTQ+ community, where fictioning is a prevalent tool passed down through generations.⁠

In collaboration with Minor Attractions, we welcomed Eva Dixon and Deborah Lerner to our founder’s home for a discussion on obsessions, ideas, and the cultural fixations that repeatedly surface in their work.⁠
⁠
To accompany the episode, Dixon and Lerner each release a selection of work shaped by penetrative acts of looking, collecting, and assembling.⁠

We are delighted to welcome Richard Cook to the platform. ⁠
⁠
Richard Vernon Francis Cook (born 1947, Cheltenham, England) is a British painter living and working in Newlyn, Cornwall. Cook has been exhibiting for over twenty five years and has received awards from the British Council and the Arts Council. ⁠
⁠
While grounded in observation, Cook's paintings resist straightforward representation. Their animated, impastoed surfaces hold in tension the shifting atmospherics of the natural world and the artist's anxious desire to fix the act of looking in paint.⁠
⁠
Cook has exhibited widely, including at Tate St Ives and the Hayward Gallery, London. His work is also held in major public collections, including the British Museum and the Arts Council Collection.⁠

Emerging artist Sadie Aston explores the existential experience of inhabiting a body and the act of surrendering to the world around us, emphasising how our internal self-perception reflects and shapes our external experiences.

Through paint, she looks at the body as a place of experience; existing within it, connecting to it, and relating to others through shared presence, emotion, and energy. ⁠

“When I think about how to express myself through paint, I always go back to movement. Even though I stopped dancing around eighteen, those years at the barre never really left me. My brain still thinks in first position and the specific way a body curves or holds a shape.”⁠

Swipe to step inside House of Hulda, your residency home.

Set between mountain and ocean at the edge of the Arctic Circle, House of Hulda offers artists the increasingly rare possibility of total retreat into practice. Fewer than 5,000 people inhabit the island; a hidden, otherworldly place suspended beneath the shifting Northern lights, snow-laden peaks and a silence so profound it borders on the sublime.

Residents are granted exclusive access to a private live-work space conceived for deep concentration and sustained immersion. The space comprises an upper floor with a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and open-plan living and dining area. On the ground floor, there is an additional guest bedroom alongside a dedicated workshop space.

Participation is free, with artists invited to leave behind one work for a growing permanent collection and future exhibition programme.

A stipend from Rise Art and House of Hulda, generously supported by Nordland Fylkeskommune, contributes towards flights, materials and food.

Applications close 24 May 2026, 23:59 CEST.

House of Hulda has partnered with Rise Art to launch a new programme of four fully-funded artist residencies in Andøya, Norway.

Set within the remote Arctic landscape, the residency offers a rare opportunity for focused development in an incredible, otherworldly location.

Includes:
- Travel, materials and food covered
- Stipend provided
- Opportunity to exhibit in London and Andøya (2027)
- Contribution to a growing permanent collection
