Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery Pitzhanger Manor was the country retreat of Sir John Soane, one of the most influential architects in British history.

Pitzhanger reopened in spring 2019 following a £12M three-year conservation project to return it to Soane’s original designs. Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery is a Grade I listed house and contemporary art gallery in Ealing, West London, designed by Sir John Soane in 1800 as his 'dream house'. Currently undergoing a major renovation project, Pitzhanger will reopen to the public in 2018 having undergone rigorous restoration and a renewal of our contemporary art gallery and grounds.

For more than seven decades, Marthe Armitage has designed and printed her patterns by hand, building each image colour by colour through a process that is both meticulous and deeply personal.

'Marthe Armitage: Pattern Maker' brings together not only finished wallpapers and textiles, but also sketches, blocks and working materials that reveal how these distinctive designs come to life.

A rare opportunity to step inside the artist’s process and see the craft behind the pattern.

As Marthe Armitage: Pattern Maker enters its final weeks, you can bring a piece of the exhibition home with you.

Our shop is stocked with a special collection inspired by Marthe’s hand-printed designs, from notebooks and posters to cushions and bucket bags made using genuine textile offcuts. You’ll also find selected wallpapers, including special exhibition offers while stocks last.

Each design begins with Marthe’s distinctive lino-cut process, where every colour is printed by hand. The result is work that feels both timeless and unmistakably personal.

A rose, a bridge, a house.

Over the past two months, Phoebe Collings-James's sculptures and clay paintings have transformed Pitzhanger's galleries and historic interiors, inviting visitors to move through the house in new ways.

From monumental forms to intimate surfaces marked by the artist's hand, the exhibition creates unexpected encounters between contemporary practice and Soane's architecture.

This is the final week to experience 'Phoebe Collings-James: a rose, a bridge, a house' before it closes on 14 June.

What does a place look like when you draw it from memory?

This Sunday, families are invited to explore Pitzhanger through mapping, drawing and observation at our free drop-in Mapping Pitzhanger workshop in the Rickyard.

Part of London Festival of Architecture, the workshop encourages children and adults alike to look closely at the spaces around them, from the historic manor to Walpole Park, and create their own imaginative maps of the site.

While you're here, step inside the Wonder Room to discover Architecture Takeover, a display celebrating the creativity of local young people who have taken part in our After School Architecture Club this year.

Before Walpole Park became the green heart of Ealing, it was part of Sir John Soane's vision for Pitzhanger.

When Soane transformed the estate in the early 1800s, he worked with landscape designer John Haverfield (1744–1820) to reshape the grounds with sweeping drives, picturesque planting and a serpentine lake. Beyond the house stood a productive walled kitchen garden supplying fresh fruit and vegetables for both Pitzhanger and Soane's London home.

More than 200 years later, gardening remains part of life at Pitzhanger thanks to the dedication of our volunteer gardeners, who help care for the historic landscape that surrounds the manor.

This weekend, our annual Plant Sale offers a chance to take a little inspiration home. Browse plants grown and donated by our volunteers, pick up gardening advice, and support the care of Pitzhanger's gardens.

Spend an evening with 'Phoebe Collings-James: a rose, a bridge, a house'.

Join us next Thursday for a curator-led tour exploring the exhibition across Pitzhanger’s galleries and historic interiors — from the sculptural forms of the 'Infidels' series to Phoebe Collings-James’s layered clay paintings.

The tour is included with general admission and takes place during Thursday Late opening hours.

Ealing Borough residents can also enjoy Pay What You Can admission from 5pm, including a free option when booked online in advance.

Bank holiday walks, colourful exhibitions, clay-covered hands and cardboard cities.

Pitzhanger is open this Bank Holiday Monday, 25 May, 10am–5pm, with plenty to explore across the manor, gallery and gardens during May half-term.

Join a Family Clay Workshop with ceramicist Annabel Johnson on 28 May, inspired by our current exhibitions 'Marthe Armitage: Pattern Maker' and 'Phoebe Collings-James: a rose, a bridge, a house'.

On 29 May, the Rickyard becomes an ever-changing world of cardboard building, colour and creative play for Mini Makers: Messy Play with artist Mikaela Roe-Bowers.

You can also explore Sir John Soane’s historic manor, discover our two exhibitions, or join one of our regular guided tours every Thursday and Sunday.

This summer, Clare Woods’ fluid and vibrant paintings will unfold throughout Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery.

Garden Without Seasons brings together 29 new and recent works — paintings, collages and prints created over the last four years — where flowers, still lifes and architectural details move between abstraction and figuration.

At the centre of the exhibition are the flora and natural forms that Woods returned to during the pandemic, at a time when familiar objects took on a heightened resonance. Through swirls of wet oil paint and luminous colour, her works invite a slower and more detailed way of looking.

The exhibition continues Woods’ exploration of the natural world, time, absence and the fleeting nature of life, while responding to the historic interiors and gardens of Pitzhanger Manor.

This summer, Clare Woods’ fluid and vibrant paintings will unfold throughout Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery.

Garden Without Seasons brings together 29 new and recent works — paintings, collages and prints created over the last four years — where flowers, still lifes and architectural details move between abstraction and figuration.
