A big win for homegrown music 🌱🇬🇧

Official Charts has launched the new Official Homegrown Albums Chart, giving UK artists a dedicated space to be recognised and celebrated.

For the MMF, this follows more than 18 months of advocacy around the declining visibility of British artists in our own market and the need for stronger platforms to help new UK music cut through.

With British artists now making up only around 20% of the UK singles chart, this is an important step towards putting homegrown talent back in the spotlight and giving managers another way to demonstrate the impact of their artists’ campaigns.

A huge amount of work has gone into this across the industry, and we’re really pleased to see it become a reality. 🌱

📻 Tune in to BBC Radio 1’s First Look Show this Sunday, 4-7pm.

Are UK artists still getting the chance to build audiences at home?

In a new interview with Music Week, MMF CEO Annabella Coldrick reflects on the challenges facing new British music - from the dominance of passive streaming and algorithmic discovery to the increasing difficulty of reaching the level where sustainable careers can be built.

As Annabella puts it: “Once you get big enough, the algorithm then pushes you further, but getting to that level in the first place is increasingly difficult.”

But the conversation isn’t only about what’s changing. Managers are already looking beyond streaming alone, towards curation, direct relationships with fans, offline communities and the long-term development of artists.

And the role of management matters: for every £1 invested in managers, £8 is generated for the wider sector.

So what does the next era of music management look like?

That’s a conversation we’ll be taking further at the MMF Summit: Back to the Future?, exploring how we build authentic communities in an age of algorithms and AI.
