We were shocked and deeply saddened when John J Johnston, our Chair of Trustees, passed away unexpectedly on 28th August. In his memory, John's beloved husband John Cunningham set up a fundraiser and kindly made us one of the beneficiaries, along with the Egypt Exploration Society. We've been overwhelmed by the generosity of John's friends and family who donated a total of £5000 in his memory, and we're so grateful to have received our portion of that money. We'll be putting it towards making art that makes a difference, as John always unfailingly supported us to do.

The Gentlest Work: a q***r myth in pieces - now available!

In 2021, we first presented our digital installation The Gentlest Work. The installation explores the q***r possibilities of the House of Atreus, a family in Greek myth who can’t seem to stop killing each other. Rather than one definitive retelling, we offer dozens of fragments you can follow in your own journey through their world and ours. Through it we searched for ways trauma can be settled, and joy found.

Now, while we search for a permanent home for the installation on a bespoke site, we've decided to make the installation available once again in its original form for anyone who wants to revisit it (or who missed it the first time round!) All we ask is a donation of your choosing in exchange, so we can keep making new work from old stories.

Ecotales - a work in progress. We're still overwhelmed by the warmth and positive feedback given to us at our showing at Battersea Arts Centre in June. We spent a week playing, devising, moving, and laughing to make something new that we hoped would start meaningful conversations about our relationship to the natural world. We'll be sharing some highlights over the next week or so, and we couldn't be more excited for what this project will grow into.

We are pleased to announce the first research and development sharing of our new project about the stories we tell about humans and the natural world around them on Friday 14th June at Battersea Arts Centre.

Our newest project explores myths, folk stories, and forgotten tales of the past that say something about how humans imagine the natural world around them and the non-humans they share that world with. Our aim is to develop a story cycle that invites audiences into this imagining, creating theatrical encounters that will spark curiosity, reflection, and - so we hope - action.

Our ultimate aim is to bring this story cycle to representatives of different communities across Great Britain and Northern Ireland, offering it as a starting point for meaningful exchange and collaboration on bespoke story cycles reflecting local environmental concerns. This work-in-progress showing will reflect our initial research and development completed in partnership with artists in Liverpool and Belfast, writer Annie Siddons, and climate scientist Dr Marcus Badger.

In working with representatives from each community, we will offer the existing cycle as a starting point to begin a new collaboration. This will result in a unique version of the cycle for each stop of the tour. We will work with the community representatives to dramaturg a bespoke arrangement of the existing material in a way that speaks to them and to generate new material based on co-exploration of the local environment and the ecotales told about it.

The work-in-progress sharing we’re offering at Battersea Arts Centre will be a glimpse at some of our early ideas from the project’s development so far. To pilot a way of working for the project and to generate material for the initial story cycle, we partnered with artists in Liverpool and Belfast. These artists were hugely generous in exploring local environments and the subsequent ecotales that emerged with us. Together with material inspired by working with climate scientist Dr Marcus Badger and writer Annie Siddons, these ecotales have informed our work on the project so far.

We’re keen to share where we’re at with you on the project - we’d love to hear what you think about the project as it stands and where it could go. This is our most ambitious venture to date and so your thoughts - we hope more gentle than furious - will be essential for us to nurture this project to the next stage.

We have big news we’ve been waiting a long time to tell you 💜 we’re saying goodbye to By Jove - the name, that is! Time to say hello to 🪶 Theatre of the Gentle Furies 🪶 (or just Gentle Furies for short!). But why the change?

We’ve been working together as a collective of artists and academics since 2011. Since then we’ve made eight new shows, adapting Greek myth, Shakespeare, and Jane Austen. Making our latest, The Gentlest Work, got us thinking about who we were 10 years after setting out. We are different people and different artists now. Although we have so much fondness for By Jove, we’ve slowly come to the realisation that we aren’t that company anymore. Enter the Furies…

In ancient Greek myth, Furies are rageful spirits of the earth who haunt those who’ve murdered their loved ones. To re-imagine their rage as gentle is a bit of a paradox - but that sums up the work we make. Our work is - at the same time - old, new, and looking to the future. It is dead serious about the problems our world faces - misogyny, q***rphobia, climate disaster, to name just a few - but approaches these problems with camp irreverence and a love of the ridiculous. It is full of fury - but full of gentleness, too.
