We have very reluctantly had to take the difficult decision to cancel/postpone the production of our play Rebel Rebel, which had been due to take place at the Bread & Roses Theatre in Clapham, London on 4 & 5 December. For various reasons our rehearsal period has been disrupted and there's now not enough time to develop a production and performances we can be proud of. As you can imagine we're bitterly disappointed, but not discouraged. If you've already bought a ticket, please accept our apologies. The theatre will be refunding you. Watch this space for news of further productions! Until the next time!

Why rebel? Why stick your neck out? Why take the risk? Rebellions seldom end well for the rebels. Rebel Rebel is a new play with music that follows the fortunes of three linked characters across two rebellions in London: Jack Cade’s Rebellion of 1450; and a contemporary climate change protest.

Jack Cade’s Rebellion involved a march on the City by about 5,000 rebels, mainly from Kent and Sussex. The target of their protest was corruption at the court of King Henry VI, amid fears of a French invasion. The rebellion, mostly forgotten now, represented such a profound political convulsion for the country that Shakespeare featured it in his Henry VI Part 2, nearly 150 years later.

Climate change protests are a divisive feature of modern life. Rebels have blocked roads, abseiled down landmark buildings to attach their banners, disrupted sporting occasions, attacked artworks and brought traffic to a standstill on the Dartford Crossing, arousing strong feelings on both sides.

Behind every rebellion, there are rebels. Who are they, and what could these two rebellions, separated by more than 500 years, possibly have in common?

We had a very successful performance of two scenes from our new play Rebel Rebel by Callum Murray at The Script’s The Thing Festival in Dorchester yesterday. Great performances, as always, from Sam Nixon as Effie and Phil Nair-Brown as John, and a fine We To Play debut from Jake Marchant as Thomas. Looking forward to performing the full-length play somewhere, some time, soon!

We're performing two scenes from Rebel Rebel by Callum Murray at 2.30pm in the Victorian Hall at the Dorset Museum in Dorchester this Saturday, 3 May. It's part of a theatrical extravaganza called The Script's The Thing, comprising 100 performances of 15 minutes each in eight venues across the town. It's all free, so do come!

Here's a little bit about Rebel Rebel:

'Why rebel? Why stick your neck out? Why take the risk? Rebel Rebel is a new play with music that follows the fortunes of three linked characters across two rebellions in London, separated by over 500 years. Climate change is the cause of the first rebellion, and a divisive feature of our times. Jack Cade’s Rebellion of 1450 involved a march on the City by about 5,000 rebels, protesting about corruption at the court of King Henry VI. Behind every rebellion, there are rebels. Rebel Rebel asks: who are they, and what could these two rebellions possibly have in common?'
