On Thursday 8 October, the National Literacy Trust and the British Council will aim to set a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for the most people reading online in 12 hours.

The record attempt is part of the Take 10 to Read campaign in the National Year of Reading 2026 and highlights the wellbeing benefits of reading and encourages people of all ages to take just 10 minutes to read on and around World Mental Health Day.

We will be showing four sessions in our Clore Studio and you can drop in for free to join in. You don't need to book an entry ticket to the Museum for this, but if you'd like to visit our exhibitions, you'll need a separate ticket. We do ask you to book a session online but you can stay for more than one session, and you don't need to stay for the full session. The 10 minutes of reading is what counts! Bring your own books or read one of our comics!

The four sessions:
Ages 5 to 8: A reading of Super Uma by Rashmi Sirdeshpande, followed by a draw-along activity with illustrator Nakul P.
Ages 8 to 12: Frank Cottrell-Boyce will read from The Blockbusters! and explore themes including cinema and culture.
Ages 12 to 16: Nathanael Lessore will discuss topics linked to What Happens Online, including digital identity, confidence, family and school life. Please note that this event includes embarrassing anecdotes relating to bodily functions and toileting accidents. Some viewers may find these references unsuitable or uncomfortable.
Ages 16+: Coco Omer and Zubs, alongside reading ambassadors, will discuss their connection with reading and what it means for their wellbeing.

For a couple of titles from our shop that are arguably some of the most emotive publications we have on the shelves. You will not be able to read these without your eyes becoming damp either from the incredible storytelling or a sense of recognition of your own experiences. These books also demonstrate the incredible value of graphic medicine - of telling these types of stories through the art of comics, zines and graphic novels. A balm for the mind both in the reading, and creation of, these stories.

Take Care, Son is Tony Husband's story of his Dad and his Dementia. The title is a reference to his last words to his son – on a day when Tony had spent the day in the care home with no sign of recognition.

Aliceheimer's - Through the Looking Glass is Dana Walrath's exploration through text and collage of her mother's descent into Alzheimer's disease. "Graphic medicine let's us better understand those who are hurting, feel their stories, and redraw and renegotiate those social boundaries. Most of all, it gives us a way to heal and to fly over the world as Alice does."

Want to hear from the artists in our special exhibition Does my head look BIG in this? The art of portrait caricature?

Book your space for our start-studded panel discussion with Nicola Jennings (whose work you can see in The Guardian), Dave Brown (whose work you'd recognise from the Independent), and Wilfrid Wood (whose pieces were in this year's RA Summer Exhibition)!

Why is caricature relevant today? How does it influence popular opinion? What happens when your subject doesn't like their caricature? Hear their thoughts on these questions and more.
