Is this for you? Doubts and fears about your voice? Unkind inner dialogue?
Everybody knows at least one person who thinks they can’t sing.
Maybe that’s you, or maybe somebody else springs to mind.
People rarely seem to come up with “I can’t sing” entirely by themselves and I’m interested in who comes up with the label.
There’s always a person, an incident or a story attached to it.
A teacher said something. Someone laughed. Somebody else in the family was “the musical one”. You didn’t get picked for school choir and were sent to sit “over there” and have been sitting over there ever since.
One careless comment can have an lifelong shelf life. Someone says something when you’re nine and then, forty, fifty or sixty -plus years later, they still get the casting vote on whether you sing or not.
That can’t be right.
That is where Sing Therapy™ came from.
It’s more than your voice.
Of course, actual singing happens, but equally we work with the body, the thinking, breath, resonance, songs and simplified and accessible technique - while examining the origin story of the accumulated mental gremlins who heckle from the sidelines.
They particularly interests me, those gremlins.
Who are they?
And why did they get to decide?
I’d genuinely love to hear your stories. Was there a person or a moment that changed the way you thought about your singing voice? Or have you always sung quite happily without ever doubting whether you were entitled to?
Tell me in the comments.
P.S. If any of this has struck a chord, my next five-week Sing Therapy™ Foundation course starts online on 19 October. It’s where we start exploring all of this in practice (and it’s much more jolly than it sounds!)
