I’m very grateful to be named a medallist in this year’s Art Basel Awards. It means a great deal to have a practice like this recognised, one that continues to take shape through an ongoing across unlikely intersections of the material and digital. Big thanks to the organisers and the selection committee, and congratulations to the fellow medallists - I’m honoured to be in your company!

First day of my month-long residency at - already full of surprises and discoveries. Feeling really excited to dive into R&D for my upcoming projects, and to work on reanimating my performance practice with a new technological twist. I’ve admired the artistry of ever since my first baby steps in the world of theatre - and it feels special to be able to find inspiration now in this beautiful residency space he created, surrounded by incredible people, art and knowledge.

The fog splits under a crashing beam, false routes fading away, and the lone electric track that survives glows with grave intent, even though the pulse running through it crackles with a kind of mischievous disbelief at its own theatrics

Day 2 of my takeover of .io 🩵

This print series is a part of my solo show “Play Nice” at Somerset House.

When the viewer sits on the school chair facing a wall, a row of cold tube lights snaps on. Their harsh flicker reveals a set of artworks arranged like the portraits of “great men” that once hung in my classrooms: white male writers, scientists and thinkers presented as the universal standard.

Here, that familiar format becomes a reconstructed pantheon of the archetypes and stereotypes that shaped my experience as a migrant raised inside a colonial system that denies its own coloniality. Each portrait is synthesised using AI through image-to-image pipelines that I fine-tune with my own datasets, combining Suzani embroidery imagery, classroom portraits of so-called “remarkable persons,” and images of my own face. By training AI on these materials and generating new images from them, the work reflects on how identity is constructed, imposed and continually reimagined.

Gold medal 🥇 at the 18th International Triennial of Textile hosted in in Łódź. I didn’t anticipate receiving this award, and I feel both humbled and thankful for this recognition!

‘Her Stage’ series is dedicated to my maternal grandmother - to her strength, her unrealised dreams - and is about the systems that surrounded her, as well as the unexpected ways memory lives through the body.

Thank you to the jury, curators, and museum team for your care and belief in this work, and to all the artists and friends I have the privilege of showing alongside in this wonderful event.ariza.gonzalez .men .kowalewska.165
