Blue Shadows is part of a project exploring loss, ritual and layers of grief through the transformation of funeral flowers using multiple alternative photographic techniques and printing processes. The images in this publication derive from cyanotype prints of flowers which were made in 2021 in Japan. This was during a period of 10 days covid quarantine after traveling for the 49th day ceremony (Shijukunichi) for my mother’s passing. The cyanotypes were then rested for five years before being transformed into the next stage.

‘This video was recorded at Masato’s workplace, the Municipal Environmental Information Center. The table where the book is placed was crafted from recycled thinned timber. The center also raises Japanese bell crickets (suzumushi), and you can hear the delicate sound of their wings in the background. Japanese bell crickets are a seasonal symbol of Obon, a time for remembering lost loved ones.'

The series in the exhibition, The Shadows of the Flowers, began with the news of Sugawara's mother's passing.

This was in 2021, when travel restrictions due to Covid prevented her from returning to Japan immediately.

However, friends and colleagues sent flowers in sympathy.

She was not able to return immediately, but eventually made it back for her mother's 49thday memorial.

Unable to discard them, she kept the flowers in the freezer for two years.

Two years later, she pressed them directly onto film, preserving their last traces.

The prints in the exhibition were made from flowers sent by close friends, pressed directly onto photographic film and developed using plant-based developers.
