In Zimbabwe, a group of women known as Akashinga meaning "the brave ones" in Shona are rewriting what wildlife protection looks like. Founded in 2017 by the International Anti-Poaching Foundation, this all-female ranger unit is made up of rural women, including single mothers and survivors of domestic violence, trained to confront heavily armed poachers head-on across vast nature reserves.

What makes this model truly powerful is what it builds beyond the wilderness. Akashinga is creating female leaders, generating economic stability for local communities, and proving that conservation and human empowerment are not separate goals they are the same mission.
