In other news it is now time for His Majestys Sagbutts & Cornetts to open its doors to a new player by putting up for grabs the bass seat in the group, hitherto, and ever since the group’s formation in 1982, solely the “property” of Stephen Saunders. If you could potentially see yourself as the 2nd person to occupy this position then please drop us an email to the address below, attach your CV and we’ll be in touch. With regret we need to restrict expressions of interest to UK resident players. Trials will take place in Reading on Friday January 9th 2026.

Following our post last month announcing Steve Saunders’ retirement from His Majestys Sagbutts & Cornetts following 43 splendid years as the the group’s bass player, we would like sincerely to thank everyone for their congratulations and warm wishes. The post attracted a 4-figure number of views and more than 100 comments. This post today is to say thankyou on behalf of Steve and to assure all his well-wishers that each and every comment reached him at his home in Sussex. He was extremely touched by the depth and warmth of your reactions and, being Steve, he was completely stunned since he never saw anything like this coming in any shape or form. THANKYOU EVERYONE.

𝐇𝐢𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐣𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐲𝐬 𝐒𝐚𝐠𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐬 & 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐬 is both happy and sad to announce the retirement of the group’s bass sackbutt player, Stephen Saunders. Happy because Steve, as co-founder, played with the group for 43 years (1982-2025) visiting more than 30 countries across 4 continents, leaving behind a raft of happy memories: sad because he is a great friend and an amazing colleague and we don’t want to let him go! You can hear his incredible sound in every one of our recordings and broadcasts. His contribution to the group has been astonishing.

Please join us in wishing Steve a long and happy retirement. Dear Steve, THANKYOU for everything. We miss you.
