"Beauty is an abstract reality that needs shape and form for its manifestation. The process of its’ intentional and purposeful manifestation through form, colour, pattern and shape is what I call Art". (Fatima Zahra Hassan)
Fatima Zahra Hassan is one of the early graduates of the innovative miniature painting program established at the National College of Art in Lahore. Having mastered the age-old technique, Hassan set for herself the much more daunting task of infusing her work with the same perennial spirituality that emanates from the best of the Islamic miniature tradition. The artist explored the link between art and mysticism further while pursuing her Masters at the Royal College of Art and then Ph.D. Currently a professor of fine art in the United Arab Emirates, Hassan continues to paint and show her work in Europe and the Middle East.(Valerie Behiery, Islamic Art historian - Islamic Art Magazine).

“Thief in the Fold of My Veil “
A contemporary Mughal and Persian inspired miniature by British-Pakistani artist Fatima Zahra Hassan, weaving together traditional Islamic manuscript illumination with Punjabi Sufi poetry by Bullah Shah, a 17 century South Asian poet.
At the heart of the piece, a figure in a vivid orange robe stands waist-deep in water, arms raised, a pose of surrender, longing, and spiritual ecstasy. Around them unfolds a dreamlike garden: blooming florals, butterflies, and a starlit sky resting above an interlocking tessellated water pattern.
Framing it all is Shahmukhi / Nasta’liq نستعليق calligraphy (the Perso-Arabic script used for Punjabi). The banner text reads:
میری بکل دے وچ چور
“Meri Bukkal De Wich Chor”
A line from the legendary Baba Bulleh Shah, “There is a thief hidden inside my cloak.” A Sufi metaphor for the Divine presence, or the ego, concealed within us all. This painting is part of her Muraqqa Album produced in 1997, London.

I took this photo years ago while visiting my parents in Found this at the back of the house in the wilderness near Karachi and Lahore railway track.
This stunning spider lily, likely Hymenocallis littoralis (beach spider lily), is instantly recognizable by its pure-white, thread-like petals radiating from a delicate central cup.

Six slender petals
Yellow-tipped stamens
Glossy, strap-shaped leavesFragrant, elegant blooms

A beautiful example of nature’s intricate design. 🌱🤍
