Toady is the 90th birthday anniversary of French actor and European cinema heavyweight Alain Delon.

With his striking looks, Delon found international fame as a leading man from the 1960s to the 1980s. He starred in many acclaimed films like Rocco and His Brothers, The Leopard, and Le Samourai, and had a much-publicised romance with actress Romi Schneider.

Remember, remember the 5th of November!

Guy Fawkes Day, also known as Bonfire Night, is celebrated on November 5th each year in the UK. It marks the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when Guy Fawkes and a group of conspirators tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament to overthrow King James I. Fawkes was caught guarding barrels of gunpowder beneath Parliament, and the plot was foiled.

November 1st is All Saints' Day, also known as All Hallows' Day or Hallowmas, when the living commemorate the dead and all the saints of the Church are honoured.

In many cultures, this day is part of a two-day observance. The following day, November 2nd, is All Souls' Day, which is a day to pray for the souls of all the faithful departed, including friends and family. Traditions include singing hymns, chants, or folk songs and decorating the graves of loved ones with flowers and candles

We're going off on a witchy tangent today for Halloween and looking at the connection between witches and the professionalisation of medicine.

In the past, women served as healers, midwives and herbalists, using traditional knowledge to care for their communities. But as medicine became a formal, male-dominated profession, these women were often accused of witchcraft. The rise of university-trained male doctors went hand in hand with efforts to discredit women’s healing practices as dangerous or superstitious.

This shift was as much about power as medicine. Calling women healers “witches” helped men take control of medical knowledge and authority. In doing so, society pushed women out of a field they had once led, turning healing from a shared community practice into a regulated, male profession.

Tomorrow marks the 75th birthday anniversary of Dame Zaha Hadid. The Iraqi-British architect is widely regarded as one of the most innovative and influential figures in contemporary architecture, with designs, often described as "neo-futuristic" or "parametric," including the London Aquatics Centre, the Guangzhou Opera House in China, and the Heydar Aliyev Center in Azerbaijan. Following her death in 2016, Hadid's legacy endures in the ongoing work of her architectural firm.

More from the Schuh Collection - our featured source for October.

Today we are taking you into abandoned places. Photographer Andrea Schuh visits disused factories, civic buildings, and houses to capture these eerie and often unnerving images. Vast factory halls and crumbling stairwells echo with the footsteps of long-departed inhabitants.

Schuh's interest in true crime and the remnants of heavy industry shapes her storytelling in compelling ways, along with her approach of framing each scene in her mind as a room: four walls and a threshold that dares you to cross over.

Charging into the week like Liberty Leading the People.

This epic work by Eugene Delacroix measures an impressive 3 x 3.6 metres, making it too large to be transported in a commercial aircraft. This left the Louvre with a predicament when the painting had to be sent to Tokyo for an exhibition in 1999.

Enter the Airbus Beluga, used to transport oversized aircraft parts between Airbus's production facilities. Shaped like a Beluga whale, these enormous planes can accommodate two wings from an A350, as well as the occasional canvas from a French master of the Romantic era. The painting, in a special pressurised container to minimise vibration and temperature fluctuations, made it safely to and from Tokyo.

Today marks the 200th birthday of “The Waltz King,” Johann Strauss II.

Strauss composed more than fifty waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, and other forms of dance music, and is widely credited with popularising the waltz in 19th-century Vienna. Among his most celebrated works are 'The Blue Danube', 'Tales from the Vienna Woods', 'Kaiser-Walzer', 'Frühlingsstimmen', and the lively 'Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka'. His operettas 'Die Fledermaus' and 'Der Zigeunerbaron' also remain enduring favourites on the world’s stages.

Strauss was the eldest son of composer Johann Strauss I. Despite their father’s opposition to all his sons' musical ambitions, Strauss pursued his passion and ultimately surpassed his father’s fame, leading to a well-known family rivalry.

Today is the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.

Discussions leading to the creation of the United Nations began in 1944, when representatives from the United States, United Kingdom, Soviet Union, and China met at the Dumbarton Oaks Conference in Washington, D.C. to outline a new body for international peace and cooperation.

The UN Charter was drafted and signed in San Francisco on April 25, 1945, and officially ratified on October 24, 1945, by the five permanent members of the Security Council—China, France, the Soviet Union, the UK, and the US—along with most of the other 46 signatories. This date is now celebrated worldwide as United Nations Day, marking the birth of the organisation dedicated to promoting peace, human rights, and global unity.
