Happy International Dance Day 🧡
Sending love from Protein Dance!

We’re sharing powerful moments from There and Here 2024, performed at The Place, London, launching Refugee Week 2024. This unforgettable piece brought together an incredible ensemble of artists from Iran, Colombia, Afghanistan, Congo, Peru, Cameroon and Ukraine.

Over three weeks at The Place, participants came together to sing, dance, express their creativity, and share their individual stories—building something rooted in connection, courage, and collective resilience.

There and Here is dedicated to the over 100 million people worldwide who have been forcibly displaced due to persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations, and the impacts of climate change.

We’re proud to announce that There and Here returns this year with two performances:

📅 Thursday 21 May 2026

🎬 We’re excited to begin a new participation project with students from Newhaven School in Greenwich over the next three weeks.

Together, the students will take part in creative workshops and collaborate to co-create a dance theatre film at Tramshed, Woolwich — exploring movement, storytelling and their own ideas through dance and film.

This project is part of Luca Silvestrini’s Protein’s Real Life, Real Dance inclusion programme, which champions young people’s voices and creativity. Previous projects include But I Am (2023) and This Is Us (2021).

Funded by Royal Borough of Greenwich.
Supported by Tramshed, Woolwich Common Community Centre, GCDA Trading, Woolwich Works.

We can’t wait to get started and see what the students create! 💫

✨ News! “But I Am” is heading to Puerto Rico! ✨

We’re so pleased to announce that our award-winning film But I Am has been selected for screening at Festival Videodanza de Puerto Rico from 13–16 May 2026 🇵🇷🎬

Created with and for young people from King’s Park and Newhaven School, this film grew from a three-week intensive at Woolwich Works in November 2023 and was shot across the Royal Arsenal Riverside.

Made in collaboration with filmmaker Alice Underwood Films, Andy Pink composer and dance artists Temitope-Ajose Cutting and Emily Thompson-Smith, this project celebrates youth, creativity, and collaboration.

After screenings in Australia, USA, China, Cyprus, and the UK, we’re so excited to share this journey in Puerto Rico next!

Thank you to everyone who made this possible.

📣 We are delighted to share the news that Protein has been nominated for the Creative and Cultural Contribution Award at the Best in Greenwich Business Awards 2026, sponsored by Clarion Housing.

We’ve been based and making work in the Royal Borough of Greenwich since 2012, and over the years we’ve been collaborating with local organisations, schools and communities, performing in high streets, iconic buildings and outdoor spaces, care homes, community halls and libraries.

As a Resident Artistic Company at Woolwich Works since 2021, we are continuing to reach out and engage artists, communities and audiences to make Greenwich a borough full of cultural activities to create, enjoy and participate in.

We are pleased to be nominated alongside Greenwich+Docklands International Festival, Punchdrunk, Taru Arts, Sugar Studios and we congratulate with all shortlisted.

Embrace, Protein’s ongoing professional development programme, returns for its 10th edition. The day combines practical and reflective training, creating space for sharing, discussion and learning around working with — and practising — dance today.

Join us for a one-day training designed for artists, facilitators, educators and practitioners working with young people, particularly those in alternative provision or with lived experience of trauma.

Bringing together leading voices from theatre, youth services and creative practice, Embrace is grounded in Protein’s inclusive, people-first approach.

🌟 Guest contributors include:
• Jacqueline Stewart & Tracey Anderson from Clean Break
• Teachers from Newhaven School
• Independent dance artist Charlene Low
• Speakers from Voice Box

Participants will leave with greater confidence, deeper understanding, and practical tools to support young people with empathy, clarity and care.

This training is for anyone working with young people — not just artists — and is particularly relevant for alternative provision, youth justice and trauma-affected communities.

🎫 Important Ticketing Info
Only 10 places available for the morning session with Clean Break (full-day pass only)
• Full Day Pass – £37 (10 spaces)
• Half Day Pass (from 1pm) – £17 (25 spaces)
