What happens when a group of brilliant Filipino and East and Southeast Asian theatre-makers come together to explore a new play?

Assistant director Grace shares her reflections on the R&D process behind In the Remains by Jose Socrates Reyes, winner of the 2025 Woven Voices Prize. From unpacking the story's emotional core to playing Filipino childhood games in the rehearsal room, this is a behind-the-scenes look at a week spent developing a powerful new play about the 2017 siege of Marawi.

Come and work with us πŸ‘‹

In a new round of recruitment the Gate is seeking a confident, collaborative and compassionate Executive Director to partner with our artistic team in steering the company. As we navigate a transformative era for the arts, we need a strategic leader who balances commercial acumen with a deep-seated passion for artist-led storytelling.

In May, we were joined by Lyndsey Turner for 'a director's toolkit' workshop on working with actors.

Together, we explored the realities of the rehearsal room, attendees shared stories from their own practice, and we unpacked the decisions directors make that can shape a production for better or worse. From casting to conflict management, it was a brilliant opportunity to reflect, learn and swap experiences with fellow theatre-makers.

A special thank you to Lyndsey for such an open and insightful session, and to all who attended

Stage one: denial.
Stage two: optimism. Solutions.
Stage three: grief. Anger. Despair.

Go through the stages, and then make a decision.
