The United National declared 11 February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The theme has been picked up by the Royal Photographic Society’s Women in Photography group.

The Woman Science Photographer of the Year competition is open to all female and female-identifying photographers and aims to close the gender gap that still persists in science and technology subjects as well as in the photography industry.

The competition is free to enter.

Submissions are invited from 1 November to 15 December from female and female-identifying photographers, regardless of age, experience or background. Entry is free.

I really enjoyed writing the exhibition text for ABSURD at OHSH Projects and once again learning how art can help make sense of the world - or at least ask the right questions.

The exhibition continues until the end of October, the text is now live on FAD, hope you'll get a chance to enjoy both.

I spent the weekend in the company of Russian artists who recently left their home (their careers, families and friends) for fear of being conscripted to fight a war they object.

Our conversations reminded me of a specific type ‘cancel culture’ described by gallerist Marina Shtager in a recent FT article (wedged between auction news and Jarvis Cocker on the link below):

“Cancel culture deprives the artists of the opportunity to be heard,” said Marina Shtager at this year’s Photo London art fair (May 12-15). “Meanwhile, the culture of silence carefully built around this issue leaves me even more defiant.” The director of the eastern European-focused Shtager Gallery was speaking in defence of Russia’s contemporary artists, having brought works by the photographer Danila Tkachenko despite what Shtager describes as “voices suggesting this is not the right time”.

Tkachenko had a criminal case opened against him in Russia just before the fair, because of what he describes on Instagram as the “unsuccessful action” of releasing 140 blue and yellow smoke grenades from an apartment near the Kremlin. The act was “prevented by the FSB”, he wrote, and added that while he has since left Russia, “my relatives and friends are in danger”. One of his friends “was beaten up and sent to jail for 10 days” and his mother has been threatened with a criminal case, he said in a May 13 post.

My first trip out of London took me to Kent in preparation of Venetia Nevill's forthcoming exhibition in Sevenoaks. The Spirit of the Land opens with a Private View. Only one stop by train from London Bridge!

Olga Karlovac's exhibition at Willesden Gallery in July was one of the first exhibitions back in the real world as London was coming out of lockdown.

Hard to believe that a whole week has passed already.

It was lovely meeting Olga Karlovac after months of planning her exhibitions via countless emails and skype calls. She managed to fly over from Zagreb just in time to catch the last few days of her beautiful solo show at Willesden Gallery.

A bit closer to home (and very close to my heart) is the Community Street project the first stage of which I've been helping to coordinate. Excited to hear J.King The Artist talk about his mural at Acklam Village.

Part two will be broadcast live from The Muse at 269 - Gallery / Studio this afternoon - with contributions from Nuria Gambau who has just finished installing her contribution to the project at the ACAVA gates on Maxilla Walk, as well as the team Westway Trust who commissioned the works.
