Folk in the Cellar

Folk in the Cellar 2nd & 4th Mondays in the month at 7.30pm. Inclusive and eclectic folk club at The Slaughtered Lamb, Clerkenwell, EC1V ODX. Featured guest acts and floor spots.

Folk in the Cellar is an inclusive and eclectic folk club, with an emphasis on everyone joining in. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Monday of every month (except August and Christmas week). Our nights take place at the fabulous MAP Studio Cafe in Kentish Town. £5 cash donation requested, so we can pay our guest artists. Most evenings feature an extended set from a guest artist or group, but half of the

evening is open to anyone to share a song, a tune, a poem…… Some evenings are singarounds, where the audience is the star attraction. We’re not dogmatic about genre, but we are completely unplugged. And we do not talk while people are performing, though joining in is usually welcome! Coming up:

Dec 22 Singaround - the audience are the star attraction. Our Christmas special. Jan 12 Singaround - the audience are the star attraction. Christmas is over! Jan 26 Midnight Ramblers - London based folk and Americana trio
Feb 9 Double bill - Richard Allen & Hannah Lovell - Richard is a writer-ranter of works of comic poetic genius, Hannah will treat us to a rendition of her new EP of self penned pagan themed songs - equal parts melodious, humorous, evocative and seductive. Feb 23 Dana Immanuel and Duncan Menzies - A sound influenced by Duncan’s Scottish folk heritage and bourbon-soaked old-timey Americana with a mutual appreciation of Led Zeppelin.

Our first singaround at our new home - the Slaughtered Lamb - was a gorgeous night of song and community. 29 acts and all of them jewels! Thanks to everyone who came and contributed, to the pub for welcoming us and special mention to Ben, the bar manager, who played cajon with the last act! Next up is Emma Scarr on 14 September - floor spots welcome as always.

Great news! We have found a new venue, at least for the rest of the summer season. Our sessions on 13 July (with the wonderful Pearl Fish) and 27 July (singaround) will be at the Basement bar at the Slaughtered Lamb in Clerkenwell. See you there 7.30 sharp for two wonderful nights of music, company and refreshments.

Terrible news from the MAP cafe. we're told that it is almost certainly going to have to close this week, after a licensing dispute.

So it looks like tonight's session, with our brilliant guest artist Omam Dawn, may be the last in what has become our wonderful home.

We will, barring miracles, be pulling out all the stops to find a new home, but in the meantime join us tonight to say goodbye and give the MAP a fitting send-off

June is a bonus month at Folk in the Cellar. There are 5 Mondays, so we have three musical evenings!

We've already had a stormer with Nod and Paul and next Monday 22nd we have what promises to be a magical evening with Omam Dawn and friends.

Then we have a very special evening on 29th when we're proud to host Jenn Butterworth for a rare solo London gig.

Jenn is widely recognised as one of the UK’s leading exponents of traditional folk guitar and as a central figure in the thriving Scottish folk music scene. She is a key member of the award-winning folk powerhouse Kinnaris Q and performs regularly in duos with Laura-Beth Salter and Will Pound. Her versatility has seen her contribute to an impressive array of projects, including performances with Fairport Convention, Fiddlers’ Bid, Treacherous Orchestra, Ross Ainslie and Ali Hutton, Bella Hardy, and many others.

Last year she released an award-winning solo album, Her By Design.

We're thrilled to have a musician of her stature playing for us. We'll be away from our normal home for this gig, at the Slaughtered Lamb in Clerkenwell.

Please note that there are no floor spots at this event.

We're delighted about this too, not only for Jenn, but also because she is playing a special solo gig for us on June 29th at The Slaughtered Lamb. Watch this space - full announcement and ticket link coming very soon!

Delighted to have received this certificate in the post from the Ireland Tonight Radio Music Awards, awarding me Best Female Vocalist of the Year for Her By Design. How cool is that?! Definitely lifted my Fairport Convention post-tour blues.

Thanks Sharon Smith Iberle and everyone at Ireland Tonight.
