Otis is a master of Congolese soukous guitar playing and can construct intricate tapestries of blissful melodies on his beautiful Gibson Les Paul custom 🎸💆🏻‍♂️
This will be part of Flo’s new collaborative EP. Looking forward to more fun sessions like this one!

tracking vocals and synth for some new material. Louis and Asher are new editions to the MAP family, having taken on one of the writing rooms long term. It was great to do some work with them and jam on some fun toys - namely the Korg Micro X and Kaossilator!

GEAR FOCUS: Weird mics!!
Sometimes you just need a bit of ‘weird’ to spice things up…
1. The Telephone
A classic home brew conversion knocked up in house from a cheap old phone and an XLR. Sounds exactly as you’d expect but… has more uses than you’d perhaps imagine. For instance it makes for a cool VERY trashy drum room mic
/ / /
2. The Dictaphone
We have a couple of these Sony dictaphones knocking around, this one has the best mic with the least internal noise… it’s still pretty noisy tbf! Capable of very cool compression and saturation effects. Has a pitch control and half speed mode for extreme lo fi madness.
/ / /
3. The Talkback Mic
A 60’s RFT 622. A very well made German omnidirectional dynamic mic. Can tolerate massive amounts of SPL / getting trodden on. Generally gets put in mad places ie on a tiled floor, taped to a toilet wall etc but also sounds great on guitar cabs

GEAR FOCUS: Delay ay ay ay ays… We have a respectable, well curated selection here at MAP taking various forms - tape echo, rack classics and ‘boutique’ guitar pedals.
Some of our favourites…
/ / /
Roland RE 301 - the 70’s green flavour of the classic tape delay. The 301 has the added chorus feature - sounds amazing on guitars and vocals
/ / /
Lexicon PCM 41 - an early digital delay with a really extreme modulation. This unit can do tasteful, sure but where it gets really fun is using it to create weird warped and chewed textures
/ / /
Boss DD3 - a really basic utilitarian pedal that always sounds great. Has that magic ‘sounding right’ effect on guitars.
/ / /
Honourable mentions to the Lexicon PCM 70 and Eventide H3000 and their v useful precisely controlled tempo sync’d delays. They get a lot of use!

Great couple of days with and her cohort, on bass .music on resonator plus special guest vocalist and on Celtic flute

The majority of the tracking was done live in our upstairs space with a couple of screens and careful mic placement. It’s always a slight gamble - musicians have to manage their individual levels in the room but it worked great with these guys and when it works it really captures something hard to define. An ‘energy in the room’ is usually what I call it! ✨
