Collaboration is one of the primary tools through which designers work, but what does the process actually amount to? While collaborative design promises rich interplay and an attention towards different contexts, the projects and objects that are labelled as “collaborative” often end up feeling cursory or superficial. The panel will discuss how designers, makers and researchers can work with one another to make their time spent together – and any associated outcomes – feel valuable, rigorous and constructive for all involved.

Saturday 16 September
Cromwell Place
11.30-12.30pm

Confirmed Speakers: Rio Kobayashi; Guan Lee, Founder of Grymsdyke Farm and Course Leader at The Bartlett, UCL; and more.

Introducing "The Farm Shop" by Fels. Curated by Marco Campardo, Guan Lee, and Luca Lo Pinto, this collaborative project brings together a group of talented designers, architects, and studios to create a functional exhibition space of locale-inspired dining homeware. Designed and produced at Grymsdyke Farm, Buckinghamshire, each element of the dining collection was born from the question: "Why do we live with the things we live with?" Over the summer of 2023, these designers engaged with the farm's local community and material palette, exploring the genesis of the things around us and how we can care for them. The exhibition showcases the entire collection, inviting visitors to interact with the space. As part of the programme, The Farm Shop will host three captivating happenings conceptualized and curated by Luca Lo Pinto. Get ready to witness the boundaries between art and utility blur, as invited artists explore what we consume and how we consume.

French architect Arthur Mamou-Mani creates swirling, 3D-printed PLA bioplastic beehives for ‘Mellifera’. The installation at Fortnum & Mason, Piccadilly, promotes circular design and biodiversity for the Festival Commissions lineup at London Design Festival 2021.

In a conversation with STIR, Arthur elaborates on the circular design themes he explored in the installation stating, “PLA itself comes from renewable resources such as sugarcane, or any kind of starch, including corn, cassava, sugar beet, or potatoes, so it’s a natural carbon sink.”
