Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera presents ‘The Secret Life of Plants. Anselm Kiefer in the Grothe Collection’, the first monographic exhibition dedicated to Anselm Kiefer in Barcelona.⁠

Bringing together around 80 works, largely drawn from the private collection of Hans Grothe, the presentation traces themes that have shaped the artist’s practice throughout his career, including memory, history, nature, mythology and literature.⁠

Curator Briony Fer reflects on Gabriel Orozco’s exhibition ‘Chronotopic’ at White Cube Bermondsey, which brings together approximately 200 new and existing works across sculpture, painting, photography, assemblage and works on paper.⁠
⁠
Taking the form of a travelogue through time and space, ‘Chronotopic’ combines the small rhythms of the everyday with the vast scale of a planetary system. Rather than unfolding chronologically, works spanning Orozco’s career form new associations, moving between science and fiction, accident and geometry, materiality and poetry, time and the untimely.⁠

Now Representing: Shigeo Otake 🎉⁠

White Cube is pleased to announce global representation of Japanese artist Shigeo Otake (b. 1955, Kobe, Japan).⁠
⁠
Developed over more than four decades, Shigeo’s singular visual language bridges classical pictorial techniques with an expansive visionary realm. Populated by fantastical creatures, fungi, flora and fauna, his compositions conjure moments of collective participation and mutual exchange.⁠
⁠
In autumn 2026, White Cube will present new paintings by the artist at Art Basel Paris (20–25 October 2026, Booth B34) and at West Bund Art & Design, Shanghai (10–15 November 2026, Booth 1F). Additionally, his major two-part institutional survey, organised by the Consortium Museum, is on view in Dijon, France, until 21 March 2027.⁠
⁠
Shigeo’s first solo presentation in the UK will take place at White Cube Mason’s Yard, London, in spring 2028.⁠

Julie Mehretu’s painting ‘Aether (Venice)’ (2011) is the focus of the latest edition of Salon, White Cube’s curated programme of secondary market presentations.⁠
⁠
Produced at a pivotal moment in Julie’s career, ‘Aether (Venice)’ is a compositional maelstrom of architectural schematics, in which aerial, cross-sectional and isometric views of Venetian churches, palaces and other landmarks are layered into a dense field of visual incident.⁠
⁠
‘My aim is to have a picture that appears one way from a distance – almost like looking at a cosmology, city, or universe from afar – but when you approach the work, the overall image shatters into numerous other pictures, stories, and events.’ – Julie Mehretu⁠
⁠
This monumental canvas was created for François Pinault’s Punta della Dogana, where it was first exhibited during the 2011 Venice Biennale.⁠

In Focus: Danh Vo’s installations at White Cube New York⁠
⁠
Amid the ceramics and wood of Danh Vo’s installations at White Cube New York are glass vases containing dried animal bones, supported by delicate metal armatures and arranged with flowers.⁠
⁠
These works draw on ikebana, the Japanese art of floral arrangement, and particularly the Sōgetsu school’s introduction of unconventional materials into the practice. Alongside 15th-century Vietnamese bowls from Hội An and black walnut from Northern California, the works bring together materials and histories from different cultural contexts.⁠
⁠
As a Danish citizen born in Vietnam, Danh brings seemingly disparate cultural and historical contexts into dialogue in his practice. As he has noted: ‘Culture is not native: culture is cross-pollination, cross-contamination.’⁠

White Cube presents new paintings and works on paper by Ilana Savdie, in dialogue with artistic forerunners whose practices resonate with her own.⁠

Bringing together artists who interrogate the human form, the presentation reveals the art-historical lineages of Ilana Savdie’s work, as well as artists’ enduring fascination with the psychological and material limits of the body.⁠
⁠
In this new cycle of paintings, Ilana addresses the body as spectacle, whether on exuberant display in parades and carnivals, or splayed in operating theatres for medical study. For Ilana, bodies are always political: the boundaries of the body are bound to fail, giving way to leakage, seepage, merger and mutation.⁠

The three figures in ‘Frozen soil’ merge across the composition, disrupting the boundaries between individual forms and evoking a state in which distinctions between the self and the other become unstable.⁠

‘I was in love with drawing the human figure. […] The discovery of altering the human anatomy and how it alters the atmosphere of the whole figure in terms of emotion. Once I tapped into that, I tried to deconstruct the human anatomy in different ways. […] I just want to capture that specific emotion through the body.’ – Tesfaye Urgessa⁠
