M(other)land
“Mother Earth, Mother Nature, motherland, mother tongue, we are all her children. Surrounded by oceans but the energy exists with us all”

M(other)land is a celebration of wombmen. The creative life force that is channelled through our minds, bodies, spirits and souls. This inner-knowing that we walk with our ancestors, a oneness that connects us all back to the same root. Over time, othered, forgotten. In M(other)land we re-member. We come back to us, the interdependent village, a synergy of individual unique expressions, despite attemps to divide. This tribe celebrate our response-ability of creation, migration, translation and the power to manifest new iterations, worthy of protection, joy and love.

M(other)land Research and Development 2016-2025

Our process has been a 6 year span of play which has been independently, funded, facilitated and produced. Everything we share is created in community, guided by workshops, wholesome, raw and honest discussions, company repertoire, freestyle movement and theatrical tools facilitated by Niquelle LaTouche who focuses on the process as power , resisting an output based rehearsal for things to organically grow over time. All excerpts shared are a culmination of efforts of 52 performers aged 11-38 from a range of experience. 2024 marked 10 years of NLA, 2025 the final R&D scene, 2026 we look forward to developing and sharing a full length work.

Beating the Odds: Belonging, Leadership, and Change. 21.03.25

Hackney is a phenomenal borough with phenomenal students and educators. A FORCE to reckon with in terms of clear values to stand on, ideological tools that live on through its students including me. I owe it all to this borough from representation, creative opportunity, and self-belief. There’s no coincidence my career has been dedicated to doing the same for others. They are trauma informed, inclusive, innovative and work in synergy as a community to support the people they are in service to. I could not have hoped for a better way to say a thank you and hopefully pay this one forward in service for the next generation as the founder of the UK’s first level 3 extended diploma in performance and production arts specialised in hip hop theatre at Sadler’s Wells East https:// Academybreakinconvention.com .

This is a reminder to me of why I am committed to the long game, and also why I started It Takes A Village Collective https:// itavcollective.com for leaders like me in lockdown. We must consider intersectionality, diversity, equity and disrupt archaic systems that embed ableism, racism, sexism, classism, ageism and soooo many other prejudices. We can no longer afford to not support and preserve our leaders’ mental, physical, emotional and spiritual wealth.

For every Ms.Blackman, Ms.Kelly, and Ms.Gallagher, I can imagine the behind the scenes, it breaks my heart seeing the echoes of what we have to go through to just exist, on our endeavour to support the young people who deserve new ways to process, transmute, make the world make sense. Shout out all the heads moving against the odds, with LOVE and HOPE in our HEARTS for better systems, institutions and spaces to dream in. Educators and heads I am in awe, the seeds we sow spout way later and I’m grateful this opportunity to say: “Dear Hackney, thank you tenfold for helping me realise my power, you will forever be etched in my heart space, my principles and practices, what a blessing it is being born in this bad bwoi borough” Love .

M(other)land Festival 2024 - Niquelle LaTouche

26.07.24 marked 10 years of Niquelle LaTouche Arts and we held a sharing of works in process and a somatic workshop at our first M(other)land Festival.

Niquelle is the founder and creative director of NLA. We debuted a section of M(other)land in 2017, to explore diaspora, migration, and the responsibility that wombmen have to celebrate our power, duality, autonomy, freedom and creative energy everywhere we go. We took a pause in 2020 and brought it back to celebrate a decade of NLA.

The biggest love to and our newest M(other)land crew members thank you for your trust, vulnerability and consistency carrying the narrative and allowing for the most comfortable transition from performer to artistic director. You were a dream to work with and we look forward to your next steps, NLA will always be here to support you beautiful beings. So PROUD!

Day 1 M(other)land crew member in 2017, rehearsal director 2019 and Dance Movement Psychotherapist 2024 who shared a gorgeous duet with Grace on the night.
