Jay Three women, three relationships, pregnancy, mental health, jokes and Prozac dreams. Jay (Celine Abrahams) loves Alex. Alex (Eleonora Fusco) loves Jay.

Jay is the second play by the Lettuce Dream Theatre Company premiering at The Hen and Chickens Theatre from 17th to 28th October. Jay wants a baby, Alex not so much. Andrea (Mari-Ange Ramirez), Jay’s best friend, finds the idea ridiculous too, especially since silences have been the main form of communication, lately. Longlisted by the BBC Writersroom, Jay is a lively comedy about pregnancy, relat

ionships and Prozac Dreams. As always, 50% of the total budget is allocated to cast and crew, who will also receive a split of the profit share depending on individual labor contribution.

“What deserves attention here is Fusco’s creation of a humane, acerbic and sensitive play which avoids falling prey to the white feminism which I was concerned it might [...] Jay is always relevant, sharp, and pulls its punches.”

Thanks to Frey Kwa Hawking and A Younger Theatre for sharing such a lovely review!

Review of Jay, a new comedy, which has much to say about relationships, pregnancy and mental health. Playing at the Hen & Chickens Theatre until October 28.

Some say being president is the hardest job in the world, but Nathalie Jomard disagrees. According to this French artist, there is nothing tougher than raising a child, and she has created playful and honest illustrations to prove it.

"Thank you for the opportunity to read your play. There's a lot to admire in this play. The dialogue is sharp, witty, and engaging, and the characters are all well drawn. I also really enjoyed the themes that the play looks at, especially the idea that we all assume a role when we’re in a relationship and that role can affect the way we see ourselves. It was cleverly explored and the device of three pregnant women in relationships felt like an original and interesting way to delve deeper into the themes of gender, relationships, and mental health. This is therefore a very strong play written by a very strong writer. The play was very close to making it through to the final shortlist, but the competition is very fierce at this stage and it comes down to very small differences. Whatever happens with this play I feel confident I will be reading/watching more by this writer in the future. We wish you all the best developing this script."

As you all seemed to enjoy following the writer's journey last year with Our Baby, I thought it worth telling the story of how Jay came about... happy reading!

One thing I like about travelling is that it seems to be a great stimulant to write something new. My first feature film, LA Hotel – which, before you get all excited, is still at the google …

“The writing in ‘JAY’ is intriguingly deceptive, with opening dialogue appearing to be knockabout banter between partners Jay and Alex. This is quickly interspersed with an energetic conscience character (the Prozac Dream), so there’s the feeling of an anarchic devised fringe show – playful and amiable. […] It’s the introduction of a third figure – friend Andrea – that fractures the relationship between Alex and Jay, and makes them see themselves anew, no longer as a couple. From this point the writing reveals itself fully as a rather surprising, mordant and tender dissection of interdependency. […] We’re cleverly suckered by the lightness of the start, and yet actually taken on a journey with care and integrity in the writing. Very much an original theatre show, there are memorable exchanges and speeches.” BBC Writersroom, Script Room 12 (Drama).

We are immensely proud to announce that Jay was longlisted by the BBC Writersroom in their Script Room 12 competition, this year.

Being longlisted puts our script in the top 4% of all submissions received!

Furthermore, "due to the high standard of work at this stage," the BBC Writersroom has decided to have our writer Eleonora Fusco on their list of promising writers to be considered for future development workshops.

One cannot write AND produce AND set design all at the same level... but one tries!

Main inspiration was the wonderful set of Lars Von Trier's Dogville. I am also personally a fan of planimetries in general.

The idea is to have our heroes on stage walking their apartment, to give the audience a true feeling of peeking in their private lives.

How does that sound, folks??
