The Playground Theatre

The Playground Theatre The Playground Theatre is a vibrant venue offering a wealth of drama, musical theatre, standup, comedy, festivals, and performing arts events.

Find us Latimer Road, London, W10. The Playground Theatre, formerly a bus depot, was set up as a creative space for innovative theatre artists of all disciplines to come and 'play' with their imaginative ideas. As a registered charity with support from the Arts Council, The Welcome Trust, Esmee Fairbarn and others, numerous projects, initiated here, went on to venues such as The Young Vic, The Hampstead Theatre, The West Yorkshire Playhouse and many others. One such project, Terrific Electric won the Samuel Beckett Award for Innovative Theatre and was part of the Bite season at the Barbican Theatre. We made the decision to open the theatre to audiences in 2017. The decision was born from the desire to bring the exceptional artists work, from those who had 'played' with us, to full production. Many international artists were invited to experiment with us including Poland's Henryk Baranowski, winner of Poland and Russia’s top award as best director, Salius Varnus from Lithuania, and Hideki Noda, currently head of Japan's National Theatre. From the UK, we worked closely with Marcello Magni, co founder of Theatre De Complicite, along with his colleague Linda Kerr Scott. Our programme includes international plays, classical concerts, opera, ballet, dance, and film. The Playground Theatre is located in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea W10. Our local community is culturally rich and diverse, we are proud to say that our theatre productions reflect this. People visit our theatre to enjoy the latest drama, musical theatre, standup comedians, festivals and performing arts. They also visit The Playground Theatre to take part in outreach projects such as Well Read. Our gem of a theatre is a registered charity, we rely on kind donations and funding to remain open. We work with established and emerging artists nationally and across the globe. Our ethos has fostered many bold and imaginative new works. We are fully engaged with our rich and diverse community here in Kensington and Chelsea, and beyond. Around half of the work that we do at the theatre is outreach focused. We look forward to welcoming you through our doors.

🚨COMING 8th of SEPTEMBER🚨

EINSTEIN! is an inspirational and true story. Based on the 2007 release of 8,000 documents and three years of research— writer and performer Jack Fry shares insight into Einstein’s early life, a story that few people know. Among many things, this play highlights the trials we all face as individuals in a world that at times doesn’t want us to succeed.

Told with humor and heart, Jack Fry breathes life into one of the most intriguing icons of all time. This is a multi-award winning and critically acclaimed show with over 25 consecutive sold-out shows at the Santa Monica Playhouse and is the longest, nonstop running show in Los Angeles since 2012.

🚨Direct from the Edinburgh Fringe, you are cordially invited to an audience with Dame Elizabeth Taylor!🚨

Kayla Boye IS the Hollywood legend as she takes us behind the scenes to expose the realities of superstardom shrouded by glitz and glamour, uncompromisingly revealing her innermost feelings about love and life… The triumphs and tragedies of a scrutinised existence, from ‘Lassie’ to ‘Cleopatra’...from Burton to Humanitarian…An extraordinary life…

Born to stardom, for a decade she was the darling of Hollywood, but her fairytale wedding to Nicky Hilton soured on their wedding night, she lost beloveds James Dean and Montgomery Clift to car crashes, she lost her 3rd husband - and the love of her life - Mike Todd, in a plane crash, she almost lost her own life to pneumonia, she lost her 5th and 6th husband - and passion of her life - Richard Burton, to alcoholism. She lost her best friend, Rock Hudson, to AIDS… and she very nearly lost herself... but she stopped on the brink. Defiant, she became the voice that demanded that AIDS be taken seriously, that it was more than just “a Gay Disease” and her influence led to activism, and her activism to acceptance and cure.

🚨NEW PREVIEW SHOW🚨 28th-29th July!

Van Beethoven has unfinished business! Pushed by his relentlessly ambitious father as “Ze next Mozart!”, battling a broken heart, broken body, broken ears, and certain he is nearing his demise, Ludwig reincarnates “to put ze record straight!” Combining virtuoso pianism with Teutonic stand-up comedy, concert pianist, Mike Hatchard Hatchard , provides an hilarious insight into ‘The Mad Pounder’ coming to terms with life, death, music, Amadeus, Bach, Chuck Berry, and his wretched final sonata. Hatchard, who has accompanied Spike Milligan, Frankie Howerd, Cleo Laine and David Essex, among others. Directed by Olivier winner Guy Masterson (The Shark Is Broken).

🚨NEXT SHOW ALERT🚨

Boombox romantic, Lloyd Dobler (Say Anything)(Dennis Trainor Jr) returns! Seriously unserious, devoutly disobedient, still refusing to buy, sell or process anything. Now a Zen-punk dissident duct-taping ancient spiritual wisdom to the collapse of the American empire, with deep gratitude and zero credentials, like a sticky note saying: ‘Be kind. Rewind. Revolt’. Join Lloyd in a kinda-sorta guided meditation to survive late-stage effin’ everything... Like a vinyl record spinning in a microwave of manifest destiny, humming: ‘Oh well. Whatever. Never-mind.’ Written and performed by Dennis Trainor Jr. (Manifest Destiny’s Child), directed by Olivier winner Guy Masterson .
