Tobi Alexandra Falade [] is a Nigerian British visual artist creating figurative oil paintings engaging with narratives of modern Black British life and dialogues of African and post-colonial contexts. The compositions for her large oil paintings are created by collaging and manipulating photography of Nigeria from family albums, and her own present-day photography to draw these two different worlds together and construct new narratives.

Tobi frequently uses herself as a model within her artworks to explore narratives of identity and self. Her term ‘shadow self’, refers to a version of herself that she imagines has continued living on in Nigeria even after she was physically divorced from her country of origin, she thinks of this version as her ‘Other’ and explores this subject in a bronze mask casted from her face bearing the same title. Her distinctive manipulation of materials and the techniques she uses to approach these themes and subjects, allows her to join worlds together.

She has recently been awarded The SPACE Artists Award (2021), The Very Special Fund, a grant by Hennessy in partnership with gal-dem (2021), Black Girl Fest Creative Fund (2021), Hottinger Prize for Excellence FBA Futures (2020), and The Royal Female School of Art Foundation (RFSA) Final Year Award (2019). Since graduating from Wimbledon College of Art (2019) she has been awarded studio spaces by Art Alive London (2021), The Koppel Project Campus London (2020), and Arts Student Union University of the Arts London (2019). Tobi Alexandra Falade was born in Warri, Nigeria 1995, and moved to the UK aged 7. She is based in Liverpool and London.

Tobi’s painting ‘What do we become’ (2021) is featured at the current exhibition with Kanbi Projects ‘Untangling the Perils that Tangle Us’ running until 17 December at The Koppel Project.

Together with Platform Black [.black], Tobi will be leading the upcoming ‘Collage Workshop: Self Care for Black Bodies’ happening 1st December, 4-5:30pm at The Koppel Project Hive.

‘The Jubilant Liz’ by Gayle Ebose

This painting explores the present reality a lot of women are facing at this time - that being a first time mothers in the midst of a pandemic. This conversation brought about many laughs and storytelling as was a reminder that talking through this time with friends is an act of healing by bringing life and joy to one another through the exchange of words and encouragement.

Gayle Ebose uses the process of portrait painting to encapsulate the joys and mundanities of everyday Christian living in the 21st century. Her work reflects on the beauties and intricacies of femininity, motherhood, the trials of illness and the fragilities that come with an ever-changing, perishable body. Her visual language is strengthened by the conversations she has with her subjects via video calls as she paints them simultaneously.

Ebose was born and bred in London. She studied Broadcast Journalism and has since worked in the editorial and educational sectors before taking a year out to pursue Fine Art Painting at Camberwell College of Arts at the University of Arts London. Her graduate show was online yet had the privilege of exhibiting her work at the Saatchi gallery’s ‘London Grads Now.’ exhibition as a way to reopen the gallery after the first lockdown in 2020. Ebose has since been in group exhibitions virtually and has more exhibitions lined up this year.

‘I watch as you buy and hug you as you eat.’ by Barbara Korede Majek

This work is inspired by the migration of Nigerians to London from 1960s.
Building community and settling in areas like Peckham. Transforming the borough to resemble the ˜hustle and bustle” spirit of Nigeria.
Using this vibrant atmosphere of Peckham market, this piece explores the mystical notion of connectivity and teleporting. The fruits and veg are portals to ancestral roots... a sweet memory, nourishing reminder of we are. A grippling reminder needed as Peckham gradually gentrifies; the process of displacement haunts the existence of many.
