Society Members Support Successful Side Saddle Show at Addington

The Society of Master Saddlers was well represented at the National Side Saddle Show held at Addington last weekend, with a strong contingent of members coming together to support one of the most prestigious fixtures in the side saddle calendar.

Members specialising in side saddle travelled from across the country, with many exhibiting on their own trade stands, assisting fellow exhibitors, demonstrating their expertise and sharing their passion for the craft with competitors and visitors alike. The event provided an excellent opportunity to celebrate the specialist skills that continue to underpin this unique area of saddlery.

A particular highlight of the weekend was Prime Warden Mark Romain, who attended his first prizegiving on behalf of the Worshipful Company of Saddlers to present the prize in the Junior Side Saddle Championship. Supporting young riders is vital to ensuring the future of side saddle, and it was great to see the next generation recognised.

The weekend also showcased the close knit community within the side saddle world, with Society members working together throughout the event, offering advice, craftsmanship and encouragement to competitors and visitors alike.

As the Society celebrates its 60th anniversary, occasions such as these demonstrate the depth of expertise within our membership and the important role members continue to play in preserving traditional saddlery skills while supporting the future of equestrian sport.

It was a great day at the British Dressage Youth Home Nations event, concluding yesterday, at Vale View Equestrian for riders under 25 representing England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.

Congratulations to the North & West Region Team on their win. 🏆 The top four riders each received a Saddlers' Company prize – a headcollar and rosette. (As seen in the red buckets!)

It was wonderful to see how grateful the riders were to receive their prizes, and we're also delighted to have supported British Dressage by having PW Mark Romain there to present the awards.

Well done to everyone who took part!

Mark Romain attended his first prizegiving as Prime Warden at the National Side Saddle Show at Addington last weekend, presenting the Junior Side Saddle Championship award on behalf of the Worshipful Company of Saddlers. Congratulations to all the prize winners during the Show.

This is an important moment for recognising the next generation of side saddle riders and craftspeople. The Show brought together the skills and close‑knit community that underpins this unique area of saddlery.

It is particularly encouraging to see that side saddle making has recently been reclassified by Heritage Crafts as Resurgent. A welcome shift from its previous Endangered status, due to a positive increase in new entrants to this specialist craft. Although still a relatively small discipline within saddlery, its profile has grown and the number of practitioners is rising.
