Hi I’ve been a bit quiet this last week as I was winding down my social media management gig for , and rebuilding their website, launching later today.

I have also been busy working behind the scenes to decide how I can best serve clients right now, and in that time realised that I have been undervaluing myself and my services; so as of today my services offered have changed as have their rates.

It’s always awkward for me to talk about the money side of things but as I currently don’t have an agent to do it for me I need to…(if anyone knows of an agent looking to represent a sound designer slide me a DM😉)

🎧I am going back to primarily working in Sound with the following services:

🔊Sound Design for theatre, film and other media if no fee is attached on job posting and I am asked for my rates, they are moving inline to equity/bectu rates

🎙Podcast/YouTube/streaming sound editing is moving to an hourly rate of £15/hour but can be negotiable for smaller projects or charitable projects.

At this time I am not taking on any social media management clients or any new Squarespace website clients, but if I open them up again rates for both social media management and website builds will be proposed bespoke to your needs after a discovery call with at least a £400 minimum per platform for social media management. Squarespace site maintenance will be moving to a rate of £15/hour

That I will be offering 1:1 power hours though bespoke to your social media needs(such as questions on how to use insights beyond vanity metrics) at a rate of £100 per session.

My own website is getting a facelift and all of this information will be found there as well.

Cleaned my little office area today, it was becoming a distraction, buzz decided my chair was his after it was all done… happy to say after some careful negotiations and a little bribery on my part he’s now snoring away on the sofa 😂😂

Anyone else have a furry coworker they need to bribe out of their chairs?

🎵We don't talk about Bruno- no no... sorry about the earwig I couldn't resist.. in this case Bruno is mental health for freelancers....

Looking after your mental health in any work capacity is difficult to prioritise when there are deadlines to meet, clients to face etc. but it seems impossible sometimes as a freelancer... but as my gran always says "you can't pour tea from an empty teapot.." meaning you need to look after yourself before you can help others.

We've gotten better about having the conversations in the workplace about mental health but if you are a freelancer you may be worried about bringing things up with your clients or taking the time you need to recharge.. for fear of losing the next contract or being seen as unprofessional.

I am a BIG FAN of working from my floor office or duvet office whenever possible.. The work still gets done but if I'm already in a relaxed position if I had a horrible nights sleep the night before it almost gives me permission to grab a power nap to refresh my creative brain.

Or if I'm having a really bad brain day shooting clients an email saying "Hiya, not feeling great today I'm still working on x but going to log off emails/whatsapp for a couple of hours, if you need something urgent please feel free to call me." setting that boundary for myself and my clients lets them know I am still working on their needs but that I need a contact break, allows me time to take a quick walk with Buzz or have a cuppa with T while he's still working from home. I'm by no means perfect at this but I'm trying and if you're like me worried that you'll be letting someone down if you take a well deserved break.. this is your permission to do just that. Step away from the screen and go make a cup of your favourite workday drink... you've got this.

I know of these organisations that are more than happy to help you:

Happy New Year!

2021 was a roller coaster of a year with many highs, lows and in-betweens...

the continual shield and Flexi-furlough until July at my theatre job, applying for and not getting then reapplying and getting the DYCP grant for ambisonic and binaural sound in a VR/AR environment using game engine technology. Finding an amazing couple of mentors, reconnecting with old ones, and overall finding my passion for sound design again.

Meeting a couple of amazing producers from LA for a project we're currently working on and hopefully will be able to announce soon.

To admitting to myself I needed outside support to get on top of my mental health struggles and finding an amazing therapist and finding out I wasn't alone in those struggles.

Working on 3 festivals, 2 as a designer and one as a social media manager, helping The Space celebrate its 25th birthday and spreading my wings to go freelance full time after 10 years of working at the Space.

Working with my amazing salon social media client, trying to navigate the ever changing restrictions and worries around the pandemic.

Attending amazing master classes from The Two Laura's and getting more confident in all of my abilities.

Meeting amazing friends, losing some others, finding a great community with Centr, losing 25kg and counting, and navigating a flat sale during a pandemic(take two on that about to commence in January).

Booking an amazing show for the Vaults festival 2022, and so much more that I'm forgetting I'm sure.

I hope for all of us 2022 is a little bit smoother of a ride but no matter how it turns out, remember you are loved, you are amazing and you can do anything you want to achieve!

I haven't posted much on this account, mainly because I've been incredibly busy with grant learning, project work, client work and balancing being sick and family needs. So I'm logging off this weekend to spend family time with my boys, Tom and our pup to recharge.

2022 is starting off slightly uncertain with the pandemic and what it means for myself and my clients/projects but like a sailor adjusts their sails to adapt the change in wind. I'll adapt and grow as well.

Wishing you and yours a very safe and Merry Christmas(if you celebrate), and happy new year.

Posted • I came to the space, slightly broken both physically and mentally, unable to do the job I loved because of that. After a meeting with Adam, I came on board as a fledgling front of house volunteer, and found(without being immodest) I was actually pretty good at it.

I was not JUST be a Theatre Manager or Duty Manager, or JUST a Sound Designer who worked with Space Productions every now and then I was welcomed into the amazing family that is the Space team. Any time I failed at something it was never a worry, we regrouped, learned from it and tried again. I was encouraged to develop and to push myself out of my comfort zone. And by that encouragement I now have the opportunities that lead me to fly the nest into the big, wide world. I know I always have a home at the Space, its walls and more importantly people within them my safety net of support when I feel I can't do it.

When I started at the Space 10 years ago, "I can't" was a HUGE part of my vocabulary, as I leave it is no longer on my radar and that shows just how much of an amazing place it is filled with amazing, insanely talented humans.

Thank you will never be enough Adam, Matthew, Pradeep, Andy, Caroline, Mike, Tice, Sepy, all of our amazing interns, volunteers, and artists(who are too numerous to name but still so bloody special in their own right) Ian McKellen, our audiences, our community members, bar staff, and anyone my befuddled and emotional brain has failed to mention.

I love you all.

I'm happy to announce that I'm doing the Sound Design for Labyrinth Diet by Laura Horton()part of the Foreword Festival

Directed by Charlotte Everest()
Performed by Anjelica Serra

Running the 8th to 12th June, 7:30
Saturday matinee: 2:30, with a livestream on the 10th(7:30) & 12th of June 2:30 (🎫 links in bio)

About the show:

"I’m supposedly an average size. If that’s really the case though, why don’t I feel it? If I’m average, why doesn’t it feel more normal?"

At a clothes swap party where nothing fits and no one understands chub rub, Louise feels like life won’t improve until conditions are right, but who decides that? A comical and poignant play about self-acceptance and how it’s exhausting trying to fix your own brain, let alone anyone else’s.

As this play takes place at a clothes swap, we’re supporting to gather clothing donations to help provide women in need with appropriate interview-wear. If you have any confidence-boosting, interview appropriate outfits that you no longer require, please bring them to the performance, where they will be donated at the end of the run!

About the festival:

The Foreword Festival sees 4 plays, developed through the venue’s ScriptSpace programme, staged for a week each, back to back, this June. These plays were selected over 200 scripts submitted in January 2020 to the Space.

We’re currently running a crowdfunding campaign, there are some exciting rewards on offer for pledges(link in bio)

Pledging to our crowdfunder will mean giving your support to 24 emerging freelancers, after a year where it’s been incredibly difficult for them to earn a living doing what they were born to do.

You’ll be helping to showcase the incredible talents of 4 wonderful playwrights and be a part of getting these brilliant plays on the stage.

You’ll be supporting the Space, a venue that has worked tirelessly, over the last 12 months, to provide digital theatre, workshops and events, keeping people engaged and entertained during lockdowns.

I went from being too young for s*x scenes to old enough to play a wife overnight. It’s weird.’

Felix and Caitlin are child actors navigating the tricky transition to adulthood in the withering glare of public scrutiny. As they deal with mental illness, s*x and finding their identity, can they help each other stay balanced? Or will they simply drag each other down?

Happy to announce that I'm doing the Sound Design for Look Who's All Grown Up by Abigail Chandler as part of the Foreword Festival at . Directed by Ella Murdoch. We run the 15th-19th June at 7:30pm with a Saturday 2:30 matinee as well as live-streaming performances on the 17th at 7:30 and 19th at 2:30(booking links are in my bio)

So I didn’t get the news I was hoping for with the grant application that would allow me to study more in depth Sound Design practice in VR/AR. The feedback was that they preferred another application which I’m told means it was a strong application and I should reapply. Which I will, and I have some other amazing projects in the works so swings and roundabouts…

But taking a part of the day to recognise that rejection even though a HUGE part of this industry we call entertainment still sucks and hurts.

I’ll keep grinding though, I’ve wanted this career(even if I didn’t know what it was called) since I was 8, and coming from a small town in Wisconsin I knew it wasn’t going to be an easy road. So each NO is Next Opportunity and a chance to regroup

But for this afternoon/evening I’m taking the time to acknowledge my very valid feelings.

Another Throwback post, I’ve got some pretty cool things in the works but nothing I’m allowed to talk about yet so it’s just going to be a trip down memory lane for a bit.

This time it’s a visit to the summer production in 2018 Bluebird by where not only did I design the sounds I also designed the show image as well.

It was a challenging show mainly due to an incredibly hot production week I swear I drank 2 litres of water per night and I was just pressing go buttons, but I can’t wait until I can get back into an incredibly hot theatre space during the summer again!

Stay safe!

Throwback to when I literally got to play with a papier-mâché Monkey’s Paw while I was handling the social media campaign for The Play at 8: The Monkey’s Paw a thrilling radio play in a play back in October 2019!

Can’t wait until Theatre is fully back but until then stay safe and be careful what you wish for 😉😉
