A musical journey around the UK's coast 🌊

Following Radio 3's epic odyssey around the British Isles, celebrating the lighthouses that have guarded our shores for generations, there’s another chance to hear the Proms celebrate 100 years of the Shipping Forecast.

Recorded at the 2025 Proms in Belfast, 100 Years of the Shipping Forecast featured music inspired by the sea, alongside Yonderland, a BBC commission and world premiere by Poet Laureate Simon Armitage and LYR, performed by the Ulster Orchestra.

Ambrose Akinmusire and the BBC Concert Orchestra perform My Ship at Miles Davis: A Celebration for the .⁣
⁣
Kurt Weill and lyricist Ira Gershwin wrote My Ship for the 1941 Broadway musical Lady in the Dark. Miles Davis and arranger Gil Evans used it on their 1957 collaboration Miles Ahead. The Evans-Davis partnership would become one of the most influential in 20th century American music, fusing modern jazz and classical, and building on the musical innovations pioneered on the Birth of the Cool sessions.⁣
⁣
Conductor Miho Hazama, who studied both classical and jazz composition and has released several jazz albums, also includes selections from the classic Evans-Davis albums Sketches of Spain and Porgy and Bess in this celebratory concert.⁣

Putting the 'P' in ELP 🥁⁣

ELP's rock reimagining of Copland's 'Fanfare for the Common Man' kicks off the Prog Rock Prom. Copland himself gave permission for the band to release their version in 1977, then built from just three instrumentalists, keyboardist Keith Emerson, bassist Greg Lake, and drummer Carl Palmer. ⁣
⁣
Now nearly fifty years after release, the last surviving member of the group, Carl Palmer performs alongside the BBC Concert Orchestra and conductor Robert Ames to bring the full piece to life again.⁣
